Research is an integral part of a pharmacist’s professional development. Listen in as ASHP’s Gina Luchen and ASHP Foundation’s Barbara Nussbaum share resources, training and grant opportunities offered by ASHP and ASHP Foundation.

SPEAKERS

Barbara NussbaumBarbara Nussbaum, B.S.Pharm., Ph.D., joined the ASHP Foundation as the Vice President for Research and Education in 2015 after over 4 years with the ASHP Educational Services Division as Director, Adult Learning and Educational Programs.  Her role at the Foundation is to provide strategic direction for the creation and administration of high-impact programs focused on research and leadership recognition and development.  

Barbara received her pharmacy degree from the University of Maryland at Baltimore.  She has a range of experiences in the healthcare, including, working as a clinical pharmacist at a university medical center and community hospital, conducting program evaluations and redesigning training materials for the Department of Pharmacy at the National Institutes of Health, and building and managing the billing and human resource processes for a small medical practice. 

While working as a clinical pharmacist in a community hospital, Barbara completed a Master of Science in Education, Adult and Continuing Education. Several years later she returned to Virginia Tech to complete a Ph.D. in Adult Learning and Human Resources Development.

Vicki BasalygaVicki Basalyga, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCPPS, is the Director for the Section of Clinical Specialists and Scientists. In this role Vicki serves as an information resource and provides guidance to ASHP members regarding science and scientific developments affecting pharmacy practice in health systems. She serves as secretary to the Section executive committee and coordinates activities to accomplish the objectives established by the Section. Additionally, Vicki has assumed the position of Council Secretary for the ASHP's Council on Therapeutics.

Vicki received her Doctor of Pharmacy from Duquesne University and completed an ASHP accredited PGY1 at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. Vicki is also a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist and a Board Certified Pediatric Pharmacotherapy Specialist.

Prior to her current position at ASHP, Vicki practiced as critical care pharmacist in both the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. Other activities Vicki performed included drafting policies and procedures, co-chairing the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program, creating and drafting order sets for CPOE conversion and precepting residents and students.

Gina LuchenGina Luchen, Pharm.D. serves as the Director of Academic Programs at ASHP. In this role, Dr. Luchen leads the development and implementation of programs and initiatives related to student pharmacists, schools and colleges of pharmacy, and pharmacy educators. She serves as staff liaison to the Pharmacy Student Forum and Section of Pharmacy Educators. Prior to this role, Dr. Luchen served as an ASHP Executive Fellow in Association Leadership and Management at ASHP. She received her Bachelor’s in Pharmaceutical Studies and Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy. Following her studies, she completed a PGY1 Community-Based Residency at the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy in conjunction with Balls Food Stores in Olathe, KS.
