Shipping validations are a requirement for many accrediting bodies of health system specialty pharmacies. However, a lack of industry guidance and minimal packaging solutions available on the market pose many challenges for specialty pharmacy teams. In this episode of Hot Topics in Pharmacy, we talk about the process undergone by one health system specialty pharmacy to create and validate packouts for room temperature medication shipping.

Brooke Rauch, PharmD, CSP, is currently the associate director of operations for the University of Kentucky Specialty Pharmacy and Infusion Services team. She oversees the specialty mail order operation, as well as sterile compounding to support the ambulatory infusion center. She received her PharmD from the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy and is a Certified Specialty Pharmacist (CSP).
Curstain Lopez, BS, CPhT-Adv, CSPT, is currently a pharmacy compliance coordinator at UK Specialty Pharmacy and Infusion Services with a focus on compliance within specialty mail services operations and sterile compounding. Curstain has worked as a pharmacy technician for 10 years in a variety of settings including hospital, chain retail, independent retail and now specialty pharmacy.
Gabrielle Pierce, PharmD, MBA is the director for the Section of Specialty Pharmacy Practitioners at ASHP. Prior to this role, Dr. Pierce served as an ASHP executive fellow in Association Leadership and Management. She received her Bachelor’s in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Master of Business Administration, and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from the University of South Carolina. Following this, she completed an ASHP-accredited postgraduate year 1 residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago within their Specialty Pharmacy Services team.
