Monkeypox was first detected in the United States in May and earlier in August, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) declared monkeypox a public health emergency (PHE), signaling increased urgency as the Biden administration broadens the push to contain the virus. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared monkeypox a global health emergency on July 23, and health officials in many states, including New York, California, and Illinois, have made similar declarations. Melody Berg, PharmD, MPH, BCPS, is the Editorial Director for Patient Medication Information for ASHP. She completed her PharmD at Midwestern University Chicago College of Pharmacy, Masters in Public Health at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, and residency training at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Midwestern University. Prior to coming to ASHP, Dr. Berg worked as a clinical pharmacy specialist in internal medicine, HIV and tuberculosis; as well as a content specialist for drug-drug and drug-allergy interaction content for embedded clinical decision support systems at Wolters Kluwer.
Alexander Novin, PharmD, BCPS, BCIDP, completed his pharmacy degree at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, after which he worked for 4 years at Danville Regional Medical Center in Danville, VA. Following that he completed a PGY-1 acute care residency at the UC San Diego Health and then a PGY-2 infectious diseases residency with the University of Colorado Hospital. He currently co-chairs antimicrobial stewardship for the southern Colorado region of UCHealth and focuses in inpatient infectious diseases.
Gina Luchen, PharmD, serves as the ASHP director of Member Relations for the Sections of Pharmacy Educators and Community Pharmacy Practitioners. In this role, Dr. Luchen leads initiatives that influence practice and education across the care continuum. Dr. Luchen completed her Doctor of Pharmacy at the University of Kansas, a postgraduate year 1 Community-Based Residency with the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy and Balls Food Stores, and the Executive Fellowship in Association Leadership and Management at ASHP.
Bayli Larson, PharmD, MS, BCPS, is strategic initiatives associate at ASHP. In her role she helps manage and lead a variety of collaborative cross-organizational strategic activities to help advance ASHP’s mission and vision and is also co-coordinator of the ASHP Executive Fellowship in Association Leadership and Management. She completed her PGY1 residency at UCHealth Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo., and earned her Pharm.D. from the University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
