Small and rural hospitals offer an exciting opportunities for students and a special growth opportunity for staff who serve as preceptors in this practice setting. Listeners will hear about how to get started precepting pharmacy students, how to develop well-rounded rotations, and unique rotations and opportunities available in rural hospitals.
SPEAKERS
David T. Caron, Jr., Pharm.D., is Chief Pharmacy Officer and Chief Compliance Officer at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. He practiced small and rural hospital pharmacy for most of his 30-year career and has had the pleasure of precepting hundreds of students from six colleges of pharmacy. David leads a community-wide vaccine task force effort and actively collaborates with the Council on Aging on various initiatives. He graduated from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and the University of Kentucky.
Elizabeth "Liz” Jochum, Pharm.D., BCPS, is the Clinical Pharmacy Manager at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva, Illinois. She received her doctorate in pharmacy from St. Louis College of Pharmacy and completed her PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In addition to her current role as Clinical Pharmacy Manager, she lead the creation of a residency program at her site in 2020 and serves as the Residency Program Director.
Codee Peterson, Pharm.D., is currently a pharmacist at Aspirus Medford Hospital and Clinics located in rural Wisconsin. She serves on several local and system committees. She is the primary preceptor and site coordinator for pharmacy students and offers institutional and elective pharmacy student rotations with a focus on rural health. She sits on ASHP’s Section Advisory Group on Small and Rural Hospitals.
Nathan “Nate” Cookson, Pharm.D., BCPS, is the antimicrobial stewardship pharmacist at Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester, Massachusetts. His primary areas of interest are precepting and infectious diseases. He has precepted pharmacy students, residents, and fellows since finishing a PGY-1 pharmacy residency in 2014. He has been a member of the section advisory group on small and rural hospitals since 2017.
