For a school of pharmacy, developing a cohesive PGY-1 residency program can be challenging when faculty work across a large number of different health systems. With the growing demand of post-graduate training opportunities, what can these institutions do to help meet that demand? In this episode of Educator Essentials, we talk about some innovative approaches in creating a PGY-1 residency experience utilizing multiple learning sites.

Dr. Annette Hays, PharmD, BCPS, CDCES is a Clinical Assistant Professor and PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program Director at the University of Illinois College of Pharmacy and College of Medicine Rockford. Dr. Hays completed her Doctor of Pharmacy education at the University of Illinois College of Pharmacy Rockford and subsequent residency training at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. She currently practices as an ambulatory care clinical pharmacist at UI Health Mile Square Health Center LP Johnson Rockford.
Dr. Christopher A. Schriever, PharmD, MS, AAHIVP completed his baccalaureate training at the University of Iowa in Microbiology 1987 and Master’s degree in Biological Science from Northern Illinois University in 1993. He subsequently completed his PharmD in 1999, followed by a PGY1 residency at the Jessie Brown VA and a two-year fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Schriever is currently a Clinical Associate Professor and PGY1 residency coordinator for UIC Rockford Campus.
Dr. Luchen serves as the ASHP director of Member Relations for the Sections of Pharmacy Educators and Community Pharmacy Practitioners. In this role, Dr. Luchen leads initiatives that influence practice and education across the care continuum. Dr. Luchen completed her Doctor of Pharmacy at the University of Kansas, a postgraduate year 1 Community-Based Residency with the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy and Balls Food Stores, and the Executive Fellowship in Association Leadership and Management at ASHP.
