In this podcast, we talk with pharmacy educators about how to coach learners who did not match during the ASHP Residency Match find their professional path. Dr. Sonia Matthews, Dr. Tara Storjohann, Dr. Kristin Watson, and Dr. Michael Wolcott reflect on their experience mentoring learners who did not match, and discuss ways that mentors can successfully guide learners to meet their professional goals.
SPEAKERS
Georgia (Gina) Galanou Luchen serves as the Director of Member Relations at ASHP, serving as staff liaison to the Section of Pharmacy Educators and Section of Community Pharmacy Practitioners. In this role, Dr. Luchen leads the development and implementation of programs and resources related to pharmacy learners, schools and colleges of pharmacy, and pharmacy educators. She also leads initiatives related to community pharmacy practitioners and their impact throughout the care continuum. Dr. Luchen is a graduate of ASHP's Executive Fellowship in Association Leadership and Management in Bethesda, MD. She received her Bachelor’s in Pharmaceutical Studies and Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy and completed a PGY1 Community-Based Residency at the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy in conjunction with Balls Food Stores in Olathe, KS.
Tara Storjohann is an Associate Professor Midwestern University College of Pharmacy- Glendale Campus in Glendale, Arizona. She is the course director for a longitudinal lab-based course series entitled Professional Skills Development and is board member for the Midwestern University Clinician Educator’s Program in which she works closely with pharmacy residents in the state of Arizona. Her research interests include innovative educational methods that incorporate active learning, preceptor training and development, and geriatrics.
Sonia Mathews received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree with Honors from University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy. After graduation, she completed a postgraduate pharmacy residency at UTMB Health. She has 17 years of clinical pharmacy specialist experience precepting and motivating pharmacy residents and students and is currently a clinical pharmacy specialist at UTMB Health. Since 2008, she serves as adjunct faculty from Texas Southern University College of Pharmacy where she provides didactic lectures.
Kristin Watson, Pharm D, BCCP, is an associate professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. Watson is the coordinator for the University of Maryland post-graduate year 2 cardiology residency. She is a member of the ATRIUM Cardiology Collaborative.
Michael Wolcott is the Director of Educational Resources and Scholarship at the University of North Carolina Adams School of Dentistry where he supports faculty in their teaching, learning, and scholarship. He completed his PhD at the UNC School of Education specializing in the learning sciences and psychological studies. He received his PharmD from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy followed by residency at Duke University Hospital. Michael is also a clinical assistant professor at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy.
