This podcast will discuss strategies used in small and rural hospitals to improve medication safety and address barriers that may accompany small sites when implementing safety initiatives. Speakers will also touch on how to implement select ISMP Targeted Medication Safety Best Practices for Hospitals and how implementation may look different in the small or rural sector.
SPEAKERS
Rick Hansen RPh, BSPharm, MBA-HCM, received his pharmacy degree from Ferris State University and MBA in healthcare management from the University of Phoenix. He started pharmacy practice in the 1980s as a staff pharmacist in a large tertiary center. After a couple of years, Rick transitioned to a small/rural hospital as the pharmacy director. He has worked over thirty years as a leader in small/rural hospital pharmacy.
Julie Neuman, PharmD, obtained her Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2003 from the University of Montana Skaggs School of Pharmacy. She began her pharmacist career at Benefis Hospitals in Great Falls, MT in January 2004 and has practiced there for 18 years. She has held past positions of critical care pharmacist, pediatric pharmacist, and pharmacy supervisor. She has obtained the ASHP/ISMP Medication Safety Certificate and is actively transitioning to a new Medication Safety Specialist role.
Christina Michalek, BS, RPh, FASHP, is the director of membership and patient safety organization (PSO) at the Institute for Safe Medication Practices and Administrative Coordinator for the Medication Safety Officers Society. At ISMP, Chris works collaboratively with health-system leaders and clinical staff in order to define, design, and improve medication safety initiatives. She enjoys collaborating with healthcare practitioners and sharing best practices through educational programing at national, international, state, and local-level professional conferences.
