Standardize for Safety: The Role and Reflections of the Pharmacy Technician

In this podcast, pharmacy technicians discuss the Standardize 4 Safety initiative and how it impacts the role of the technician in medication preparation and patient safety.

SPEAKERS

Matthew RewaldMatthew Rewald, CPhT, BS is Program Director for the advanced-level ASHP/ACPE accredited Mayo Clinic Pharmacy Technician Program and Assistant Professor of Pharmacy at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine & Science. Mr. Rewald has served in the pharmacy profession as an inpatient and outpatient pharmacy technician, supervisor, and instructor in many settings throughout his career, including previous experience as a Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician. He is currently serving as the Vice Chair of the ASHP/ACPE Pharmacy Technician Accreditation Commission (PTAC), which serves both the ASHP and ACPE board of directors as the national accrediting review committee for pharmacy technician education and training programs.

Andrew Nelson, CPhT is a Pharmacy Technician III - Outpatient at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, where he works at the Outpatient Compounding Pharmacy preparing both sterile and non-sterile compounded products. Mr. Nelson is also an Instructor in Pharmacy at the Mayo School of Health Sciences, where he assists in designing didactic course work and teaching classes to pharmacy technician students.

Mary Ann KliethermesMary Ann Kliethermes, PharmD, FASHP received a BS in pharmacy from the University of Michigan (1977) and Doctor of Pharmacy from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science (1981). Her 45 year clinical practice includes hospital, home infusion, ambulatory practice and academia. Currently she is Director of Medication Safety and Quality at ASHP. Her expertise is pharmacist reimbursement, medication optimization, safety and quality, and new healthcare models and payment systems.
