SPE Chair's Message February 2025

Jen Arnoldi, PharmD, BCPS

February 2025

Dear Colleagues

As we settle into 2025, I find myself reflecting on the unique role we play as pharmacy educators in shaping the future of healthcare. While recent years have brought their share of challenges to our profession and our roles as pharmacy educators, I continue to be inspired by the dedication and resilience I see in our community.

Whether through sharing teaching resources, collaborating on research, or simply being there to listen and advise, our professional community remains one of our greatest strengths. It was so rewarding to attend our section networking sessions at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting & Exhibition in New Orleans, Louisiana. Together, we shared ideas and held conversations on three important topics, including challenges and opportunities for pharmacy practice faculty in professional practice settings; remediation in advanced pharmacy practice experiences rotations; and residency program support. I’d like to offer my sincere thanks and appreciation to the section advisory groups (SAG), SAG leaders, and SAG members who came together to make those sessions impactful for our members and other attendees. If you weren’t able to attend this year, be sure to check out the session recaps posted in ASHP Connect.

This year’s Midyear was momentous for SPE, as we were able to recognize the section’s first Distinguished Service Award recipient, Lea S. Eiland. If you haven’t already, I encourage you to review Eiland’s Member Spotlight celebrating her many contributions to pharmacy education. Finally, our section executive committee also met to discuss strategic planning, our engagement in the second Crystal Ball research project, and the important work being carried out by our SAGs.

Speaking of the SAGs, if you are looking for ways to make an impact within the section, joining and participating in the work of a SAG is a direct route to opportunities to contribute. Some reason deliverables our SAGs have produced include podcasts:

Which of the SAGs below do you think could benefit from your voice?

  • SAG on Collaboration between Health Systems and Academia
  • SAG on Development of the Educational Workforce
  • SAG on Post-Graduate Education and Learning Experiences
  • SAG on Student Education and Learning Experiences

Applications for SPE SAGs applications for the 2025-2026 SPE Advisory Groups will open mid-February and will close May 1 for one-year appointments. I encourage you to apply online

Other ways to get involved with SPE or to recognize the achievements of fellow educators are:

  • SPE Distinguished Service Award: Nominations open in February and close on April 1, 2025. This is your chance to nominate a colleague for their outstanding efforts in supporting the mission of our Section and helping to advance the profession. Learn More and Nominating Instructions.
  • ASHP Pharmacy Futures 2025 will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina, and features exciting educational and networking opportunities, including the Summit on Advanced Therapeutics and the National Pharmacy Preceptors Conference. I hope to see you there!

Our section’s strength is our members, and we would love to hear from you. We want to know what issues you are facing and how SPE can better meet your needs. Please send questions, comments, or suggestions to [email protected].

Best Regards,
