Transforming Pharmacy Residency Programs With AI: Where Do We Go From Here?

With the fast advancement of AI and its use is widely spread, it is important to understand how the residency program can incorporate AI to improve administrative efficiency, residents’ learning experience, and recruitment and interview processes. This podcast will dive into the specifics of how AI can transform the current processes in residency programs from the field experts.

SPEAKERS

Jeff Cain Jeff Cain, EdD, MS, (he/him) is an associate professor and vice-chair in the Department of Pharmacy Practice & Science at the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy and director of the Office of Teaching Innovation & Scholarship. His primary classroom teaching is as course director for Pharmacy Operations and Financial Management. He also directs the University of Kentucky Teaching Certificate Program, runs an academic fellowship program, and mentors pharmacy students and residents through an academia rotation.

Heather IpemaHeather Ipema (she/her) is a clinical assistant professor and drug information specialist with the University of Illinois Chicago Drug Information Group, which is an entrepreneurial group within the Department of Pharmacy Practice at the UIC College of Pharmacy. Ipema’s practice includes medical writing, formulary support activities, and precepting postgraduate year 1 residents and advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPE) students. In the past year, she has helped to lead a drug information group in several educational activities on artificial intelligence.

Adrian Wong Adrian Wong (he/him) is a clinical pharmacy specialist in the medical intensive care unit at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. He is involved in precepting learners at his institution and chairs the pharmacy research committee. He is a co-founder of BEACON, which is a Boston-based group focused on research training for pharmacy residents and preceptors. His research interests include the use of big data, clinical decision support, informatics, and patient safety.

Michelle ChuMichelle Chu (she/her) is an assistant professor of clinical pharmacy at USC Mann School of Pharmacy, where she completed postgraduate residency training in ambulatory care. Chu established ambulatory pharmacy services for high-risk patients with multiple chronic disease states at various safety-net clinics. She is a postgraduate year 1 pharmacy residency program director at Los Angeles General Medical Center and continues to operationalize and train pharmacists on CMM in ambulatory care and community pharmacy settings.
