Managing Workforce Fatigue and Organizational Best Practices During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Our ASHP members are in various stages of preparing for, responding to, and recovering from the COVID-19 global pandemic. This is an extremely difficult time and as we – pharmacists, pharmacy residents, students pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians - continue to care for our patients, it is even more imperative to step-up our well-being for ourselves and the healthcare workforce community. Today, we chat with Jennifer Phillips and Jennifer Locker about managing resilience and well-being of staff members during the COVID pandemic.

SPEAKERS

Jennifer LockerDr. Jennifer Locker has been a practicing pharmacist for 19 years. She has been serving as a clinical manager within Advocate Aurora Health's (AAH) 27-hospital system and residency program director for the past 5 years. Her formal roles include internal medicine specialist, advanced practice pharmacotherapist, and clinical coordinator. 

Dr. Locker has been involved in several research projects, including serving as co-investigator of the grant-funded research project to implement a wellness program within the Department of Pharmacy at one of AAH’s largest health-systems. Dr. Locker is well versed in novel approaches to wellness and resilience and has taken a leadership role in working to implement a comprehensive wellness/resilience program within her Department of Pharmacy.

Jen PhillipsJen Phillips, PharmD, BCPS, FCCP, FASHP, is an Associate Professor at Midwestern University Chicago College of Pharmacy and her practice site is Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, IL.  Jen is passionate about mental health, well-being, and resilience and is actively involved in initiaves for both the University and the health-system.  She has been involved in several research projects related to burnout/resilience in students, faculty, and healthcare practitioners. 

Jen received her PharmD degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy in 2001 and completed at Pharmacy Practice Residency at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2002.  She is a Board-Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist.  Jen is a past president of the Illinois Council of Health-Systems Pharmacists (ICHP); she is also actively involved in ASHP, ACCP and volunteers for many organizations within her community. 

Vicki BasalygaVicki Basalyga, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCPPS, is the Director for the Section of Clinical Specialists and Scientists. In this role Vicki serves as an information resource and provides guidance to ASHP members regarding science and scientific developments affecting pharmacy practice in health systems. She serves as secretary to the Section executive committee and coordinates activities to accomplish the objectives established by the Section. Additionally, Vicki has assumed the position of Council Secretary for the ASHP's Council on Therapeutics.

Vicki received her Doctor of Pharmacy from Duquesne University and completed an ASHP accredited PGY1 at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. Vicki is also a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist and a Board Certified Pediatric Pharmacotherapy Specialist.

Prior to her current position at ASHP, Vicki practiced as critical care pharmacist in both the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. Other activities Vicki performed included drafting policies and procedures, co-chairing the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program, creating and drafting order sets for CPOE conversion and precepting residents and students.
