ASHP chats with pharmacist Andrew Smith at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx and Attending Physician Jonathan St. George at New York Presbyterian Hospital who are deep in the trenches in New York City and treating record numbers of COVID-19 patients. They will share their experiences and success in managing the surge of COVID-19 patients including clinical and operational considerations that can be applied across the country.

Dr. Andrew Smith completed his PharmD at Northeast Ohio Medical University, followed by his PGY-1 pharmacy residency at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center and PGY-2 in emergency medicine at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. He currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice and PGY-2 Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director at Touro College of Pharmacy and St. Barnabas Health System. Dr. Smith’s professional affiliations include American Society of Health System Pharmacists, where he serves as a member of the Section of Clinical Specialists and Scientists’ Advisory Group on Emergency Care. He also actively participates in the New York City Society of Health System Pharmacists and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy. Dr. Smith has spoken both locally and nationally on a variety of topics ranging from opioid’s impact on NYC boroughs to the current status of cannabis legalization and how health-systems should begin to prepare for patients using medicinal cannabis.
Dr. Jonathan St. George is an emergency physician with academic, community, rural and international disaster experience. Director of the Protected Airway Course which is on the leading edge of airway education innovation. Helped to write all the airway guidelines and create the protocols for the COVID19 airway teams at our institution. Currently seeing COVID19 patients in the emergency department as well as assisting with the telemedicine training program that helps clinicians monitor and care for these patients at home.
Vicki Basalyga, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCPPS, is the Director for the Section of Clinical Specialists and Scientists. In this role Vicki serves as an information resource and provides guidance to ASHP members regarding science and scientific developments affecting pharmacy practice in health systems. She serves as secretary to the Section executive committee and coordinates activities to accomplish the objectives established by the Section. Additionally, Vicki has assumed the position of Council Secretary for the ASHP's Council on Therapeutics.
Vicki received her Doctor of Pharmacy from Duquesne University and completed an ASHP accredited PGY1 at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. Vicki is also a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist and a Board Certified Pediatric Pharmacotherapy Specialist.
Prior to her current position at ASHP, Vicki practiced as critical care pharmacist in both the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. Other activities Vicki performed included drafting policies and procedures, co-chairing the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program, creating and drafting order sets for CPOE conversion and precepting residents and students.
