The ASHP & TPTS℠ Summer Internship is an eight to ten-week training program for a Doctor of Pharmacy student. The internship offers both hybrid and virtual options, and we will work with each student intern to determine the best location for the internship and the start/end dates that fit their academic schedule.
Purpose and Objectives
- To provide a pharmacy student with an opportunity to gain association experience in the specific areas of membership development and membership marketing at a national association.
- To offer an understanding of the importance of pharmacy associations to the profession.
- To provide insights into the value of participation in local, state, and national pharmacy organizations.
Qualification and Selection of the Applicant
- The applicant must be a full-time Doctor of Pharmacy student at an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy, having completed their first professional year by the start of the internship.
- The applicant must be in good academic standing.
- The applicant should have demonstrated interest in organizational activities through participation in student organizations or clubs at their pharmacy school or other community organizations.
- The applicant should be recommended by present or former preceptors and/or pharmacy school faculty.
- Selection of the applicant will be the responsibility of the ASHP and TPTS℠ Summer Internship Committee.
Internship Schedule and Activities
- Throughout the internship, the intern will attend orientation meetings with ASHP staff.
- The internship will span 8-10 working weeks, providing a comprehensive training experience tailored to meet the educational and professional goals of each intern.
- The intern will be assigned project(s) that involve collaboration across various departments within the organization.
- The intern will attend relevant meetings of division staff and external meetings deemed appropriate by the preceptor.
- When feasible, the intern will participate in meetings involving outside agencies, organizations, and other groups related to the membership responsibilities of the ASHP staff. Visits to other pharmacy organizations may be scheduled as time permits.
- Emphasis will be placed on on-the-job training aspects of the internship. The training schedule and assignments will be designed to allow the intern to explore, in-depth, those activities within the division that they are most interested in.
Educational Objectives
Upon completing the program, the ASHP and TPTS℠ summer intern will:
- Gain a comprehensive understanding of association management, including how ASHP and TPTS℠ is structured.
- Understand the need for and purpose of pharmacy organizations.
- Acquire general knowledge of the full range of association activities, such as publications, government affairs, educational services, meeting planning, and professional activities.
