ASHP Student Leadership Award

The ASHP Student Leadership Award Program recognizes students with an interest in pharmacy practice in health-systems who have demonstrated leadership ability.

This program recognizes and celebrates the contributions of students who represent the very best attributes and accomplishments of ASHP student members. ASHP offers up to twelve awards annually. Pharmacy students in the second through fourth professional years are eligible to apply.

The award consists of:

  • An award plaque.
  • A $2000 cash award provided by the ASHP Research and Education Foundation.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be a full-time pharmacy student enrolled in a professional Doctor of Pharmacy program at an ACPE-accredited college of pharmacy.
  • Applicants must be an ASHP member in good standing.
  • Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of a least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent grading system).
  • Applicants must have completed at least one academic year in their professional pharmacy program.
  • Students who have received an ASHP Student Leadership Award in the past or who are currently serving on an ASHP Council, the Commission on Affiliate Relations or the Pharmacy Student Forum Executive Committee are not eligible to apply.

To be considered for the SLA, you will be expected to submit the following:

  • A completed Professional Activities questionnaire.
  • Upload an essay of no more than 750 words that addresses the following:
    As a student leader, describe how you would actively increase awareness and understanding of emerging roles, care delivery models, and practice settings for pharmacists in 2030 among your peers. Highlight specific, innovative activities or programs you would implement to achieve this.
    In your essay, be sure to:
    1. Demonstrate Leadership: Illustrate how your leadership skills would drive these initiatives and engage your fellow students.
    2. Present Innovative Ideas: Offer creative and actionable strategies or programs you would introduce to achieve these goals. Be specific about how these ideas would impact your peers and the pharmacy field.
    3. Discuss the Practice Advancement Initiative (PAI) 2030: Explain why PAI 2030 is important for students and how your proposed activities or programs align with its goals and vision. Focus on providing clear examples and actionable strategies that showcase your ability to lead and inspire others in advancing the pharmacy profession.
  • Three letters of recommendations: one from a faculty member, one from a pharmacist practitioner, and one from a student peer.
  • Three corresponding Recommendation Forms signed by each person writing the recommendation letter. 
  • A resume or curriculum vitae.
  • A completed Certification and Acceptance signature page.
