ASHP sits down with Drs. Amie Blaszczyk, PharmD, BCGP, BCPS, FASCP, Associate Professor and Division Head-Geriatrics at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Dallas, Texas and Dana Carroll PharmD., BCGP, BCPS, CDE, Clinical Professor at the Auburn University Harrison School of Pharmacy in Auburn, Alabama as they discuss geriatric practice considerations in the long term care and ambulatory care settings at this time.

Amie Taggart Blaszczyk, Pharm.D., BCGP, BCPS, FASCP is an Associate Professor of Geriatric Pharmacy Practice and the Division Head of Geriatrics & Pediatrics at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Pharmacy on the Dallas/Fort Worth campus. She is a graduate of Duquesne University and completed her PGY1 at the VA in Milwaukee, WI and her PGY2 with the University of Maryland in Baltimore, MD. She has an affiliated practice with Advanced Healthcare Solutions, a long-term care company with ownership of over 40 nursing facilities across the state of Texas. There she focuses on the population level interventions which can positively affect the quality of care of long-term care residents. She is also the residency director for the ASHP-accredited PGY2 Geriatric Pharmacotherapy residency.
She is an active member of the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists, currently serving on the Council on Therapeutics and is a senior-level contributor to the ASHP/ACCP BCGP course and materials for recertification credit. She is also an active member of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists, and is the past-president of the Texas chapter of ASCP.
Dana G. Carroll is a Clinical Professor at Auburn University Harrison School of Pharmacy, Auburn, AL. She graduated from Auburn University School of Pharmacy with her BS (1998) and PharmD (1999). She completed a residency in primary care at The University of Mississippi Medical Center in 2000. She worked at Duke Medical Center in the emergency room as a clinical pharmacist and as an Assistant Professor at University of Oklahoma (Tulsa campus) before joining the faculty with Auburn in 2006 as an Associate Clinical Professor.
Her current clinical practice at University Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, AL focuses on providing direct patient care as part of interdisciplinary teams in a geriatric clinic. In addition, Dr. Carroll provides one on one patient education and drug therapy consults in diabetes and serves as part of an interdisciplinary team to deliver ADA certified diabetes self-management classes. She is board certified in pharmacotherapy (BCPS) and geriatrics (BCGP). She also is a certified diabetes educator (CDE). She teaches and precepts pharmacy students, pharmacy residents, graduate students (psychology and social work) and medical residents. She also holds adjunct faculty appointments with the College of Community Health Sciences Family, Internal and Rural Medicine Department and the Psychology Department at the University of Alabama.
Dr. Carroll’s current scholarly endeavors include assessing outcomes in geriatric patients from interdisciplinary care and the scholarship of teaching and learning in both didactic and clinical settings.
Vicki Basalyga, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCPPS, is the Director for the Section of Clinical Specialists and Scientists. In this role Vicki serves as an information resource and provides guidance to ASHP members regarding science and scientific developments affecting pharmacy practice in health systems. She serves as secretary to the Section executive committee and coordinates activities to accomplish the objectives established by the Section. Additionally, Vicki has assumed the position of Council Secretary for the ASHP's Council on Therapeutics.
Vicki received her Doctor of Pharmacy from Duquesne University and completed an ASHP accredited PGY1 at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. Vicki is also a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist and a Board Certified Pediatric Pharmacotherapy Specialist.
Prior to her current position at ASHP, Vicki practiced as critical care pharmacist in both the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. Other activities Vicki performed included drafting policies and procedures, co-chairing the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program, creating and drafting order sets for CPOE conversion and precepting residents and students.
