In this podcast, we will define compassion fatigue and explore its components, including unresolved grief. We will discuss ways to recognize, name, sit with, and share the emotions we experience in patient care. We will practice self-compassion as an essential strategy for clinician well-being.

Mary Kay Kusner (pronounced Kush-ner) has been a Board certified chaplain for over 30 years. Recently, she achieved Advanced Certification in Palliative Care and Hospice. Mary Kay first worked in Pediatric Oncology, then hospice and most currently in Palliative Care. She has been the Chaplain for Adult Palliative Care at UIHC since 2005. Her passion is helping patients, families and staff deal with end of life issues. She has written a Life Journal to be used with patients and families to help them participate in Dignity Therapy. Staff resilience has recently become very important to Mary Kay because of the moral distress caused by our current health care system.
Dr. Traci White received her PharmD degree from the UNM College of Pharmacy and completed a PGY-1 residency at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle, WA. She is a board-certified geriatric pharmacist and completed the ASHP Foundation Pain and Palliative Care Traineeship in 2013. She currently works as an oncology and palliative care clinical pharmacy specialist at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces, NM and is an assistant professor for the UNM College of Pharmacy.
Dr. Melissa Nguyen is from Anaheim, California and obtained her Doctor of Pharmacy from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy in 2019. Dr. Nguyen completed a PGY1 Pharmacy Resident at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, and is currently completing a PGY2 in Pain Management and Palliative Care at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Her interest areas include acute pain management, palliative care, and treating patients in the setting of complex comorbidities.
Kashelle Lockman, PharmD, MA, is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, a 2019 Cambia Health Foundation Sojourns Scholar, and a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Palliative Care at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. She is the co-director of the University of Iowa Certificate in Palliative Care and the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy Teaching and Learning Curriculum for residents and fellows.
