The opioid epidemic is a dynamic multi-layered situation with regulatory changes affecting patients and providers in a variety of ways. Although many regulation changes were designed with the best intentions, unintended consequences have surfaced in acute pain management for pediatric patients. This podcast will discuss some of the implications and safety issues while providing information regarding appropriate pediatric medication therapy.

Stephanie Weightman, PharmD, BCPPS, BCPS is a clinical pharmacist educator at UWorld/RxPrep in Dallas, Texas. Stephanie completed residency training at Children’s Medical Center Dallas and previously practiced as emergency medicine clinical specialist. Her interests include pediatrics, neurology, and education. Stephanie is an active member of ASHP’s Section of Clinical Specialists and Scientists. She has served as the chairs for the ASHP Pediatric Work Group/Pediatric Section Advisory Group and currently serves as a director-at-large.
Connor M. Stuart, PharmD, BCPPS is a pediatric emergency medicine clinical pharmacist at Children’s Health in Dallas, TX. He completed PGY1 and PGY2 pharmacy residency programs at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis, TN. His professional interests include toxicology, neurologic emergencies, traumatic injuries, and infectious diseases.
David E. Zimmerman, PharmD, BCCCP is an associate professor of pharmacy at Duquesne University and EM clinical pharmacist at the UPMC-Mercy. He is a past chair of the Advisory Group on Emergency Medicine and currently serves as a content matter expert for the ASHP BCEMP Review course. He is co-editor/author of the ASHP Publication, Demystifying Drug Dosing in Obese Patients and has a research focus on pain management in the ED.
