Recent updates to asthma guidelines suggest that treatments may be used ‘as needed’ in certain patient populations. Additionally, newer monoclonal antibodies are providing an alternative to systemic glucocorticoids for severe asthma control and exacerbation prevention. The rapid release of multiple agents and changes to national/international guidelines requires a review of asthma management.

Amber Lanae Martirosov (Smith), PharmD, MSc, BCPS, BCACP is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Wayne State University Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. She is also a Clinical Specialist of Ambulatory Care and pulmonary medicine at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. MI.
Dr. Martirosov earned her Doctor of Pharmacy Degree at Virginia Commonwealth University College of Pharmacy in Richmond, VA in 2011. She then completed a Masters of Pharmacotherapy and Residency at the University of Texas in San Antonio in 2013. Dr. Martirosov also received her board certification in pharmacotherapy in 2013 and ambulatory care in 2018.
Dr. Martirosov designed and implemented an ambulatory care referral clinic focused on managing high-risk pulmonary patients including those with asthma/COPD, ILD, and PAH. The clinic provides comprehensive therapy management, medication access/ adherence assistance, and patient education. The clinic also serves as a training site for both pharmacy residents and students.
Michelle Link Patterson, PharmD, BCACP is an Ambulatory Care Clinical Pharmacy Specialist at Penn Medicine Clinical Care Associates in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After spending three years as a community pharmacist, she completed her PGY1 training at Capital Health in Trenton, New Jersey followed by a PGY2 in Ambulatory Care at Temple University School of Pharmacy in Philadelphia. Dr. Patterson’s clinical interests include transitions of care, deprescribing, geriatrics, and diabetes.
Dr. Megan Adelman, BCPS, BCGP, CDE is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist at the Cleveland Clinic Akron General Center for Family Medicine. She earned her Doctor of Pharmacy from the Northeast Ohio Medical University and completed her PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at the Carolinas Medical Center and a PGY2 in Geriatrics at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VAMC. Dr. Adelman has worked to expand pharmacy services, helping to implement multiple interdisciplinary clinics. Her practice and research interests include gaming in education, geriatric care, polypharmacy and deprescribing, chronic disease state management, and population health management.
Dr. Ben Modrell received his PharmD from Drake University in 2019. In addition to obtaining his PharmD, he also completed a concentration in diabetes. He completed his PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at Ascension St. Francis Hospital in Milwaukee, WI. Currently, he is working as a PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Resident at CoxHealth in Springfield, MO.
