In celebration of Veterans Day 2022, ASHP Official is highlighting three pharmacist members who volunteered to join the military in service to our Nation. In this episode, we speak with W. Mike Heath, Heather Rovey, and Amanda Ferguson about their stories, reflections, and perspectives on how their military experience helped shape their pharmacy careers and how their stories provide an inspiration for the next generation of pharmacy professionals.

COL Mike Heath, U.S. Army (Ret) is CEO of Heath Healthcare Consulting, Inc. He served in the United States Army for 31 years, culminating in his final senior leadership position as Chief Pharmacist for the Army. He is a Fellow of the American Pharmacists Association and is an Honorary Lifetime Member of ASHP. In 2020, ASHP honored him with the naming of the annual ASHP MCM Federal Forum as the ASHP W. Mike Heath Federal Forum.
Heather Rovey, PharmD, MS is a senior clinical pharmacy specialist on the Pharmacy Benefit Management Team at Mayo Clinic and Alluma. In 2021, Heather retired from a career as a Navy pharmacist. She served in many roles including leading clinical and economic teams in support of the DoD Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and pharmacy benefit, chairing the Navy Pharmacy Advisory Board, managing the start-up of pharmacy services for Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, and deploying in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Pacific Partnership.
Amanda Ferguson, PharmD, EMPL, RPh is a congressional health policy fellow. She graduated with her master’s degree in public policy from Georgetown University following her service in the U.S. Department of the Air Force for almost a decade. Her domestic and international experiences cover a broad range of clinical and operational pharmacy practices, academia, and defense health care policy. The breadth and depth of her experiences have made her well-versed in the issues facing patients, caregivers, providers, and medical institutions.
Eric Maroyka, PharmD, BCPS is senior director, Center on Pharmacy Practice Advancement at ASHP. He earned a Bachelors Degree in Pharmacy and PharmD from Rutgers University and completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Previously, he was the Director of Pharmacy at Fauquier Health in Warrenton, Virginia and served over 22 years in the United States Army working in a variety of pharmacy and senior healthcare leadership roles.
