This podcast provides an interview with one of the first pharmacist hospital CEOs, Bill Evans, retired CEO of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and one of the first health system Vice Presidents of Pharmacy and author of the 2005 AJHP paper “Rationale for having a chief pharmacy officer in a health care organization”, Marianne Ivey. They will explore the evolution of pharmacy executives and the path of pharmacy practice and the opportunities still ahead.

SPEAKERS

Marianne F. IveyMarianne F. Ivey, PharmD, MPH, FASHP, FFIP, (she/her/hers) is professor emerita at the James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy, University of Cincinnati. Formerly, she held roles including vice president for Pharmacy Service at Health Alliance in Cincinnati and Director of Pharmacy Services at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Ivey serves as vice president of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) and has held leadership positions in ASHP, including past president. She's the recipient of numerous awards like the FIP Distinguished Pharmacy Practice Award, Harvey A. K. Whitney Lecture Award, and Donald E. Francke Medal. 

William EvansWilliam Evans, PharmD (he) began his career at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as a pharmacy student in 1972, joined the faculty in 1976, chaired the Pharmaceutical Sciences Department (1986-2002), & served as president and chief executive officer (2004-2014). His research has focused on the pharmacogenomics of anticancer agents in children, and received three consecutive NIH MERIT Awards. Evans has authored over 450 scientific publications and has received several national awards for his research. He was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the US National Academy of Sciences in 2002 (now US National Academy of Medicine). 

David ChenDavid Chen, RPh, MBA (he/him/his) is the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists’ assistant vice president for pharmacy leadership and planning. He has been with ASHP starting September 2004, and previously served the role as Director of Pharmacy at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville, Maryland including the Kessler/Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital. Mr. Chen earned his Bachelor of Science in pharmacy degree from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy and his MBA from the Loyola University of Maryland.
