Enhancing pharmacy residency training program quality and efficiency through alignment of pharmacy residency programs within a multihospital health system

Drs. Janet Silvester, Julie Dagam, and Jamie Kalus discuss the benefits and impact of standardizing pharmacy residency programs within multi-entity health systems, with respect to the perspectives of both the accrediting body and the residency programs. They share areas and example policies that would benefit from standardization, as well as go over the challenges faced during the alignment process.
SPEAKERS
Janet A. Silvester, Pharm.D., M.B.A., FASHP, is Vice President of the Accreditation Services Office and is responsible for providing strategic direction for all ASHP accreditation programs and services for pharmacy post-graduate residency and pharmacy technician education and training programs. Janet spent 34 years in hospital practice and was Director of Pharmacy and Emergency services at Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville, Va. prior to coming to ASHP in 2013.
Julie K. Dagam, PharmD, BCPS, FASHP, is the Residency Program Manager for Advocate Aurora Health, and is responsible for integration and expansion of residency training across the system. She has led residency growth and development, including serving as the PGY1 Pharmacy – Aurora Health Care Metro, Inc residency program director, for more than 15 years. She is active in the Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin and received the 2018 Excellence in Innovation Award. Julie has served on ASHP’s Commission on Credentialing since 2017, and is the current Chair.
James S. Kalus, Pharm.D, FASHP, Director of Pharmacy, Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Michigan. In this position, Dr. Kalus is responsible for planning, implementing, and managing all pharmacy services related to patient care. In addition, he oversees staff training and development and pharmacy research. He is Program Director for the PGY1 residency at Henry Ford Hospital and is adjunct assistant professor of pharmacy and medicine at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.
