Promoting a Culture of Safety with the Use of Gadolinium-based Contrast Agents: What Pharmacists Need to Know

Gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) are widely used in health systems. Although generally considered safe, pharmacists must still take into consideration the characteristics of each agent when making formulary decisions. This educational activity will review available GBCAs with a focus on the efficacy and safety of each agent. Commercially available GBCAs will also be compared in terms of their relaxivity, stability, dosing volume, and exposure. The education will also incorporate patient-specific clinical characteristics to consider in the safe and efficacious selection of GBCAs.
