New Approaches to Managing Acute Agitation in the Hospital Setting

Acute agitation, particularly in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, occurs frequently, resulting in multiple visits to the emergency department each year. The management of acute agitation occurs in various departments throughout the hospital and health system. This educational activity will discuss currently recommended patient-centered approaches to care, which include both nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic treatments. Guideline-recommended approaches that improve the patient experience as well as improve future interactions between patients and healthcare professionals will also be discussed.
