The five ASHP councils are the primary bodies that initiate ASHP policies on professional issues. Policy recommendations are reviewed by the Board of Directors and, ultimately, by the House of Delegates. Councils also advise the Board on ASHP activities within their respective purviews.
Councils meet yearly in September for ASHP Policy Week. The majority of council work is accomplished prior to the meeting through email and phone correspondence. One student is appointed to each council. The councils and the topics they address are summarized below.
Commission on Affiliate Relations
Advises the Board of Directors on standards for affiliation, implementation of the standards, methods of strengthening affiliates, and methods of building affiliate relationships that help advance ASHP’s objectives.

Council on Education and Workforce Development
Student education, postgraduate education and training, specialization, assessment and maintenance of competence, credentialing, balance between workforce supply and demand, development of technicians, and related matters.

Council on Pharmacy Management
Development and deployment of resources, fostering cost-effective use of medicines, payment for services and products, applications of technology in the medication-use process, efficiency and safety of medication-use systems, continuity of care, and related matters.

Council on Pharmacy Practice
Practitioner care for individual patients, practitioner activities in public health, pharmacy practice standards and quality, professional ethics, interprofessional and public relations, and related matters.

Council on Public Policy
Federal laws and regulations, state laws and regulations, analysis of public policy proposals that are designed to address important health issues, professional liability as defined by the courts, and related matters.

Council on Therapeutics
Benefits and risks of drug products, evidence-based use of medicines, the application of drug information in practice, and related matters.
