He completed his pharmacy practice residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. Travis is also a graduate of the ASHP Foundation Pharmacy Leadership Academy.

Facility

Travis recently joined Vizient, the nation’s largest member-driven health care performance improvement company, serving more than 50% of the nation’s acute care providers, which includes 95% of the nation’s academic medical centers, and more than 20% of ambulatory care providers. Prior to joining Vizient, Travis was at Northwestern Medicine, an 11-hospital health-system in Chicago. In his most recent role, he was the Director of Strategy and Business Development for the Northwestern Medicine Specialty Pharmacy. The specialty pharmacy supports 4,000 physicians and numerous clinics across the health system, which has over 3 million clinic visits annually.

At Vizient, Travis leads a new pharmacy member network dedicated to the areas of oncology and specialty. The network brings together health system oncology practices and clinics to adopt and implement best practices, create a forum for advocacy and to drive value; optimal clinical outcomes at the lowest overall cost.

During his time at Northwestern Medicine, Travis provided leadership and oversight for the integrated health system specialty pharmacy and was responsible for the implementation, strategic direction and growth of ambulatory and specialty pharmacy services. Prior to becoming Director, Travis managed oncology pharmacy services for Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Northwestern Medical Group. Significant accomplishments include establishment and growth of the Northwestern Medicine Specialty Pharmacy, development of Primary Care pharmacy services, implementation of automated dispensing cabinets in the ambulatory oncology clinics, and the remodeling of the hospital oncology satellite pharmacy to meet USP 800 requirements.

Initial Involvement in ASHP

I am currently serving as a member of the ASHP Section of Specialty Pharmacy Practitioners Advisory Group on Business Development and the Section’s Committee on Nominations. I also had the opportunity to work with my ASHP colleagues on drafting the ASHP National Survey of Health System Specialty Pharmacy Practice and had the honor of participating in the ASHP Specialty Pharmacy State of Practice in Hospitals and Health Systems – Future Directions Summit.

Why did you become involved in ASHP?

I first became involved in ASHP through my state affiliate as a representative to the ASHP House of Delegates. Through this I learned so much more about ASHP and the tremendous support and advocacy it brings our profession. I am involved in ASHP because I enjoy collaborating with my colleagues across the country to tackle initiatives and develop policy that help members address important challenges at their practice sites.

Advice for Someone New to Specialty Area

It is a very exciting time to be in health care, particularly in health system specialty pharmacy. I believe health systems are in a position to define the future of specialty pharmacy practice. My advice is to embrace the challenge and be bold in leveraging the ambulatory pharmacy enterprise and all of the services it provides. Specialty pharmacy has many challenges and opportunities, so it is important to stay connected and network with colleagues across the country to collaborate on innovative ideas you can implement at your practice site.

How would you explain the value of ASHP to a friend or colleague?

ASHP is deeply committed to elevating its members and the profession. As a member, ASHP has endless educational, networking and volunteer offerings to help you become a better pharmacy professional and leader. For me, the real value of ASHP is the ability to get involved on a committee or section to make a difference for our profession and our patients.

What is the value of ASHP for the profession?

The diverse Sections and Forums provide an avenue for members to share their specific practice related challenges and solutions which then translates into educational sessions, tool kits and policy development to benefit all members.  ASHP is the voice of pharmacists, technicians and our profession and works tirelessly to advance pharmacy practice through awareness and advocacy.
