Brittany Bates
Biographical Information:
Brittany Bates received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Ohio Northern University and completed a PGY1 residency at Akron General Medical Center in Akron, Ohio. She had experience as an inpatient clinical pharmacist with a focus on Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases/Antimicrobial Stewardship at several health systems in Ohio prior to transitioning into an academic role
Current employment, practice, and academic responsibilities:
Dr. Bates is currently an Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Ohio Northern University. She teaches in various therapeutic areas within the curriculum, which offers a direct entry (0-6) Doctor of Pharmacy degree and recently expanded to offer a 4-year Doctor of Pharmacy degree pathway. In addition to her academic responsibilities, Dr. Bates has maintained an active practice site at Lima Memorial Health System.
Significant Projects and Accomplishments Related to Education
Dr. Bates has been involved in adding new and innovative elective courses to the curriculum. During the COVID-19 pandemic she developed an online course that analyzes the pandemic from different disciplines and includes faculty and students from across the University. She has also been involved in promoting legislative advocacy within the student body. She has led the efforts to prepare students for legislative events and has worked with a team of faculty members from across the state to create a cross-college elective advocacy course.
Promotion of Health System Pharmacy Practice
Dr. Bates is passionate about integrating pharmacists and student pharmacists into the healthcare team. She developed new IPPE and APPE rotations and served as the Residency Program Director for a new PGY1 residency program at Lima Memorial Health System.
Professional Engagement & SPE
ASHP has been a professional home to Dr. Bates since she was a student pharmacist and resident. She was selected to participate in the ASHP Foundation's Pharmacy Leadership Institute in 2015. She has been extremely active in her state affiliate, OSHP, as a board member from 2017-2022 and serving as the President during 2020-21 term. After completing her leadership roles within the state, Dr. Bates sought additional involvement at the national level and is excited to begin her work with the Section of Pharmacy Educators (SPE) Advisory Group (SAG) on Collaboration between Health System and Academia (CHSA).
ASHP & Pharmacy Education
Dr. Bates feels that the networking and professional development opportunities within ASHP are extremely important to the pharmacy workforce: students, residents, technicians, and pharmacists. ASHP offers practice resources, educational programming, and leadership opportunities that are tailore to meet the needs of a very diverse and ever-changing profession.
Professional Advice
Embrace change. It will happen whether you like it or not! As pharmacists and educators it can be very easy to develop a routine and stick with it. However, our learners are changing...our patients are changing, so we MUST learn to adapt and meet the needs of the populations we are serving.
