Rigo Segovia

His Story

Rigo Segovia, Pharm.D. is currently a PGY2 Pharmacy Informatics Resident at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. He earned his pharmacy degree from the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy and subsequently completed his PGY1 residency training at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Florida. Rigo’s interest and exposure to pharmacy informatics began during his third year of pharmacy school, working as a pharmacy intern at Augusta University Medical Center in Georgia. He appreciates the various opportunities he had shadowing and assisting the informatics pharmacist throughout his internship, which inspired him to pursue informatics as a specialty.

Dr. Segovia is a PGY2 Pharmacy Informatics Resident.

Overview of Facility/Health System

Cleveland Clinic is a nonprofit, multi-specialty academic health-system that ranks among the top hospitals in the country. Cleveland Clinic's main campus is a 1,400-bed academic medical center and comprises 59 buildings that sit on top of 170-acres. In addition to the main campus, there are 18 hospitals and 19 full-service family health centers throughout Ohio, Florida, Nevada, Toronto, Abu Dhabi, and London. 

Significant Projects

At the Cleveland Clinic, Rigo has recently implemented an inpatient pharmacist handoff tool functionality within Epic across the Cleveland Clinic enterprise. He has also worked on integrating an IV chemotherapy compounding robot and other pharmacy automation devices at regional hospitals.

Initial Involvement in ASHP

Rigo is a member of the Section of Pharmacy Informatics and Technology's SAG on Clinical Decision Support and Analytics. For the 2021-2022 year, he has been spearheading the development of a podcast on autoverification.

Why did you become involved in ASHP? 

Rigo became involved with ASHP as a pharmacy student and has continued to stay connected to the organization. He values the professional development and networking opportunities ASHP has provided. The ability to learn and collaborate with subject matter experts across the country while giving back to the pharmacy profession continues to be rewarding to him

Advice for Someone New to Your Specialty Are

Do not underestimate the value of finding a mentor in your field. You can find a mentor just about anywhere, whether at your organization or outside the organization. Mentors can provide the resources and wisdom needed to help you navigate unfamiliar and challenging situations

How would you explain the value of ASHP to a friend or colleague

The value of ASHP is that it provides endless involvement opportunities for all roles and specialties in the pharmacy profession. Being involved in ASHP also allows one to build relationships with thought leaders and visionaries. These connections have been beneficial due to the open exchange of challenges and solutions.

What is the value of ASHP for the profession?

It is reassuring to be a part of an organization that is constantly advocating for the profession. Rigo also appreciate that ASHP is always looking forward and providing insight into the future of pharmacy through the Pharmacy Forecast.
