Patrick Friudenberg
Patrick’s Story
Mr. Friudenberg received his Bachelors of Science from the University of Houston in 1990. He has worked in health-system Pharmacies for the past 30 years in both small and large hospitals, in multiple roles including Pharmacy Technician, Pharmacist, Pharmacy Technology Coordinator, Pharmacy Director, Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, and Medication Management Technology Consultant. He has been able to focus on the use of technology in health-systems by working for companies such as Pyxis, Alaris, CareFusion, and Becton Dickinson.
Overview of Facility/Health System
He is the National Sr. Clinical Consulting Director for Becton Dickinson's Medication Management Solutions division (Alaris, Pyxis, and HealthSight). BD is a global medical technology company that is advancing the world of health by improving medical discovery, diagnostics and the delivery of care. BD leads in patient and healthcare worker safety and the technologies that enable medical research and clinical laboratories. The company provides innovative solutions that help advance medical research and genomics, enhance the diagnosis of infectious disease and cancer, improve medication management, promote infection prevention, equip surgical and interventional procedures and support the management of diabetes.
Significant Projects
Some of the projects he has recently been involved with include development projects that result in the identification and launch of new products, projects that define the tools and methodology for health-system based medication management assessments, as well as projects that improve business processes.
Initial Involvement in ASHP
He attends both the ASHP summer and midyear clinical meetings, as well as the annual Pharmacy Leaders Conference. He is currently serving his 5th consecutive term on the ASHP Section of Pharmacy Informatics and Technology Advisory Group on Pharmacy Operations and Automation and participates on its sub-workgroups.
Why did you become involved in ASHP?
He has worked in hospital pharmacies since being a sophomore in college, and knew that hospital pharmacy would ultimately be his career choice. He joined ASHP as a student the University of Houston College of Pharmacy, became the U of H Student Society of Hospital Pharmacists chapter president, and was the alternate student delegate to the ASHP House of Delegates in 1990.
Advice for Someone New to Your Specialty Area
Get a good foundational broad exposure to the practice of Pharmacy in health-system settings. It was through this journey that I found my passion in information technology, automation, quality improvement, and leadership. Be open to the incredible possibilities afforded to Pharmacists in innumerous practice settings. Once you find your passion, hone and develop those skills that will make you the best at it.
Value of ASHP
ASHP is an organization representing and advocating for Pharmacists practicing in health-system settings. It allows health-system pharmacists to stay connected to each other, share best practices, and recognize notable achievements. ASHP also provides a health-system pharmacists voice to numerous regulatory bodies and agencies so that its members best interests are heard.
