Katherine Moser

Pharm.D., BCPS

PGY2 Pharmacy Informatics Resident

The University of Chicago Medicine

Chicago, IL

Her Story

Katherine Moser earned her PharmD degree from Midwestern University, Chicago College of Pharmacy. She then went to practice as a clinical pharmacist at a community hospital in western Illinois before moving back to Chicago where she took a clinical staff pharmacist position at The University of Chicago Medicine (UCM). To further her clinical knowledge, Katherine completed a Non-Traditional PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency at UCM. During her PGY-1 training, Katherine discovered her interest in Informatics and stayed for a PGY-2 in Pharmacy Informatics, which she will complete in June.

Overview of Facility/Health System

UCM, established in 1927, is a not-for-profit academic medical health system based in the south-side neighborhood of Hyde Park. The medical center is licensed for 811 inpatient beds and also has dozens of outpatient clinics around the Chicago area. Consistently ranked by U.S. News and World Report, UCM provides innovative and cutting edge therapy to patients from all over the world. Pharmacists and pharmacy residents provide centralized and decentralized pharmaceutical care throughout UCM to assure safe, accurate, and cost-effective medication therapy.

Significant Projects

Most recently Katherine has been involved with an institution-wide project to reduce the interruptive alert burden that clinicians are seeing within the electronic health record. The goal is to remove clinically irrelevant alerts to reduce alert fatigue and improve medication safety. Additional projects she has assisted on include creating a clinical decision support tool for monitoring electrolyte replacement, updating tallman lettering, and creating an updated workflow for pharmacokinetic consults. She also serves as the co-chair of the Resident Development Committee at UCM.

Initial Involvement in ASHP

Katherine is currently a member of the 2021-2022 ASHP Section of Pharmacy Informatics and Technology and part of the SAG on Operations and Automation. Within the SAG she is the team lead for a webinar project: "New pharmacy and informatics work models, remote work and telehealth."

Why did you become involved in ASHP?

I became involved in ASHP to connect with other Pharmacy Informaticists and Pharmacy Informatics Residents. It is a great way to keep up to date and hear ideas from peers across the country.

Advice for Someone New to Your Specialty Area

I would advise someone new to Pharmacy Informatics to learn as much about the workflows, operations, and automation of the facility you are working for. Understanding the full medication use process is especially valuable as an Informatics Pharmacist. I would also recommend to get involved in projects at your institution that interest you, as well as professional organizations where you can network with other Informatics Pharmacists.

How would you explain the value of ASHP to a friend or colleague?

ASHP provides the resources and tools for members to meet and learn from pharmacist colleagues. The organization gives pharmacists a platform to make a difference in the way we practice pharmacy in the US and an opportunity to give back to the profession.
