His Story

Peter Weber, Pharm.D., M.B.A., received his Doctor of Pharmacy and Master of Business Administration degrees from the University of Pacific in 2009. He then completed a PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Stockton, CA from 2009-2010. Currently, Dr. Weber serves as Clinical Pharmacist at Kaweah Health Medical Center with the primary practice areas of critical care and oncology. He also serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor - Volunteer at the University of California, San Francisco School of Pharmacy for Internal Medicine Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) students. His interests include anticoagulation, critical care, and infectious disease.

Overview of Facility / Health System

Kaweah Health is a 581-bed not-for-profit community based teaching facility anchored by its 452-bed, Level III trauma center. The District consists of four campuses, including the largest acute care hospital in Tulare County, Kaweah Health Medical Center. Kaweah Health serves as a teaching facility for both medical and pharmacy residents and practice site for University of California, San Francisco School of Pharmacy APPE rotations.

Significant Projects

At Kaweah Health, I serve as a preceptor for pharmacy students and PGY1 pharmacy residents. I have been involved with evaluating workload, establishing FTE requirements for Transitions of Care Pharmacy services, evaluating current guidelines for dosing of antibiotics in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), and creating guidelines for the use of intranasal fentanyl in pediatric and emergency departments.

Initial Involvement in ASHP

I initially became involved with ASHP as a student, serving on the Student Society and Leadership Advisory Group. After taking some time off, I pursued a role with the Educational Steering Committee and am currently collaborating with other members on topics including resilience and medication reconciliation.

Why did you become involved in ASHP?

I saw ASHP as an opportunity for professional growth with the ability to grow in the profession through education. ASHP also serves as a unique opportunity for networking with colleagues, providing multiple resources for continuing education and as an advocate for the practice of pharmacy.

Advice for Someone New to your Specialty Area

Grow your network, get involved as a member with ASHP, and always stay up to date with new literature by reading AJHP. Never be afraid to reach out to colleagues if you have questions regarding patient care or pharmacotherapy and find a mentor!

How would you explain the value of ASHP to a friend of colleague?

ASHP provides a wealth of resources including research (AJHP), educational sessions (Midyear Clinical Meeting), and networking opportunities via steering committees and advisory groups. If you are a student looking to pursue a residency, ASHP provides a variety of resources for finding that ideal residency program.
