Daniel D. Degnan is the Associate Director for the Professional Skills Laboratory and a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice (Courtesy) at Purdue University College of Pharmacy. Dr. Degnan has an appointment with Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering at Purdue as a Clinical Research Associate with research interests in the areas of pharmacy automation, high-reliability healthcare, infusion pump informatics, leadership and health-system culture of safety initiatives. He works with a variety of learners in his current capacity at Purdue including industry-based fellowships in pharmacovigilance and medication safety, precepting PGY1 and PGY2 residents from local health-systems and precepting Advanced Practice Pharmacy Experiential (APPE) students in academia, informatics and patient safety. While at Purdue, Dr. Degnan has been recognized for excellence in teaching at both the university and college level. Prior to moving to Purdue in 2013, Dr. Degnan served as the Medication Safety Officer at Community Health Network for more than 10 years, garnering recognition for the health-system for excellence in medication safety from both the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) and ASHP.
Dr. Degnan received his PharmD from Purdue University School of Pharmacy and a MS in Hospital Pharmacy Administration from the University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy. He completed an ASHP-accredited residency in hospital pharmacy administration at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics. He is a certified professional in patient safety.
In addition to frequently presenting at ASHP meetings over the course of his career, Dr. Degnan has been an engaged ASHP member, serving the Section of Inpatient Care Practitioners (SICP) in a variety of roles. Professionally rewarding experiences within the section included service as a member and Chair of the Advisory Group on Medication Safety, Chair of Section Executive Committee, and ongoing role on the Committee on Nominations. In addition to his service in the Section, Dr. Degnan served in the ASHP House of Delegates for almost 20 years, the ASHP Committee on Nominations, and the former Council on Organizational Affairs. Dr. Degnan also worked with the ASHP foundation as a reviewer for the ASHP Foundation Award for Excellence in Medication Use Safety. He is a recognized Fellow of ASHP.
