Deanna Bucki-Moretz earned her Bachelors of Science degree in Pharmacy in 1984 from the State University of New York at Buffalo. After completing her initial degree, Deanna pursued a hospital residency at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, NC. In 2000, she completed her PharmD training at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has extensive experience as an acute care practitioner in a variety of hospital environments for over 30 years. Deanna directed the experiential program at OSU College of Pharmacy from 2003-2007. During her tenure at OSU she presented clerkship training programs for preceptors and students at multiple venues, mentored students at health fairs, and interacted with preceptors throughout the state. She served as Pharmacy Care Manager for Safeway from 2007 to 2009. Her responsibilities included mentoring the summer interns, expanding the travel health program, teaching CPR to immunizing pharmacists, providing MTM services, coordinating onsite health screenings and training pharmacists in the art of immunizations. Deanna transitioned to Providence Health Plan (PHP) in 2009 where she developed presentations for Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee meetings, reviewed prior authorizations, provided customer service, provided MTM consults, and coordinated student rotations. She also served as Residency Program Director for the PHP managed care residency. She continued working with Providence Health System when she accepted a role as Pharmacy Clinical Coordinator at Providence Newberg Medical Center (PNMC) in 2013. Her projects at PNMC included developing medication reconciliation services, implementing emergency medicine pharmacist, overseeing PharmD experiential rotations, and initiating a new residency program.

Overview of Facility/Health System:
OSU College of Pharmacy has a contract with the Oregon Health Authority to develop polices and procedures for the Oregon Medicaid Fee-for-Service patients. Every other month, Deanna presents her new drug evaluations, class updates and literature search findings to the state Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee. She also writes provider newsletters, reviews patient profiles for patients at risk due to polypharmacy, and mentors pharmacy students during clinical rotations. This type of work could be categorized as population health management in a managed care program.

Significant Projects:
Participation in professional organizations has been very important to Deanna throughout her pharmacy career. She has been an OSHP member since moving to Oregon from North Carolina in 2003 and actively participated on various committees including Pharmacy Week, Educational Affairs, and Annual Seminar. She served on the OSHP Board of Directors as Educational Affairs Co-Chair and Secretary from 2004 through 2010. In 2014, she was elected as OSHP President-elect and served as OSHP President from 2015 to 2016. She also co-chaired the OSHP Membership Committee from 2018 through 2021 and continues to actively serve on several OSHP committees. One of her responsibilities as OSHP President was to serve as the regional delegate to ASHP’s House of Delegates from 2015 through 2017.

Ask questions, network with professionals from different organizations, and don't be afraid to learn new concepts!

What is your current involvement with ASHP?
Deanna was recruited to serve on the ASHP Commission for Affiliate Relations (COAR) from 2016-2019. Currently, Deanna is serving as Chair for the ASHP Section Advisory Group on Emerging Sciences.

Why did you become involved in ASHP?
As OSHP president, Deanna found the resources ASHP provided to the Oregon affiliate chapter to be very helpful. The regional delegates meeting and chapter president meetings were insightful and provided an opportunity to learn about state organizations in other parts of the United States. Altough still actively engaged in the OSHP, Deanna also wanted to volunteer her time and energy to ASHP through engagement with the COAR and ES SAG. Attending policy week as a member of COAR provided an opportunity to learn first hand the value of ASHP.

How would you explain the value of ASHP to a friend or colleague?
ASHP offers substanial value to pharmacists in a variety of ways: 1. providing quality CE through in person meetings, webinars, and pocasts 2. advocacy on a national level, 3. networking opportunities at national meetings, 4. bi-monthly publication of AJHP, 5. residency support through policy and procedures developed and shared on the ASHP website, and 6. ASHP website is a valuable tool for staying current with practice developments.

What is the value of ASHP for the profession?
Professional advocacy on a variety of legislative issues that impact pharmacists. technicians, residents, and students.
