Biographical information

Dr. Brittain received her PharmD from Wilkes University and completed a PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency at Campbell University with KDI Health Solutions. After working as a pharmacist with Fred Meyer Pharmacy in Washington State, Dr. Brittain relocated to Charleston, South Carolina. For the past 15 years, Dr. Brittain has been on faculty with the MUSC College of Pharmacy and holds an appointment as a clinical pharmacy specialist with Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Health Ambulatory Pharmacy Services.

Current employment, practice, and academic responsibilities

At MUSC, Dr. Brittain is engaged in both educational and clinical activities. As part of the MUSC College of Pharmacy, Dr. Brittain teaches on self-care and therapeutics topics. Dr. Brittain works with MUSC Health to drive innovative clinical services and programs. Her primary focus currently is implementation of an employee diabetes management program with a local employer. She has also worked to implement pharmacist involvement in the SHINE Diabetes Prevention Program aimed at improving the health of patients with pre-diabetes. Dr. Brittain directs the PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program at MUSC Health as well.

Significant projects and accomplishments in community pharmacy.

One of Dr. Brittain's greatest areas of passion is working with new pharmacist practitioners through residency training. This year she is working with 3 community-based pharmacy residents and focused on clinical service expansion in the areas of medication therapy management, transitions of care, psychiatry pharmacy, and immunizations. In addition, Dr. Brittain serves on the Phi Lambda Sigma (PLS) National Programming Committee. Through this role, she is working with a team of practitioners and students to plan innovative programming for PLS members nationwide.

Professional engagement: Section of Community Pharmacy Practitioners

Dr. Brittain recently joined ASHP and became involved with the Section of Community Pharmacy Practitioners (SCPP). With a space and home for community practitioners within ASHP, she is working with the SCPP Education, Communication, & Training Section Advisory Group. She currently serves as the Vice-Chair of this working group. She looks forward to continuing her work with ASHP through educational initiatives in the near future.

ASHP & community pharmacy:

Dr. Brittain is excited to work with ASHP to grow resources for members. Of particular importance, ASHP provides members with resources to advance clinical practice in the community space and to train future practitioners.

Community practice is an exciting, ever evolving space to practice in. This is what excites Dr. Brittain most about this area of practice - and of course, one of the most accessible spaces to patients!
