Taryn Mondiello
Her Story
Dr. Mondiello received her PharmD from St. John’s University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Queens, NY in 2015. Following graduation, she completed her PGY1 pharmacy residency at the Coatesville VA Medical Center in Coatesville, PA, followed by her PGY2 ambulatory care pharmacy residency at VA Hudson Valley Health Care System (VA HVHCS) in Wappingers Falls, NY.
Dr. Mondiello’s previous roles include primary care clinical pharmacy specialist at VA HVHCS and transitions of care clinical coordinator at The Brooklyn Hospital Center. She currently works as a transitions of care clinical pharmacy specialist at Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJH) at Washington University Medical Center in Saint Louis, MO. Her role involves optimizing admissions and discharges among inpatients at high risk of readmission, participating in daily interdisciplinary rounds to help coordinate discharge planning, and serving as a resource for therapeutic drug monitoring and medication-related issues. She precepts pharmacy residents and APPE students.
Describe the facility where you work (eg. Is it a teaching hospital? Health Center?)
Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJH) at Washington University Medical Center is the largest hospital in Missouri and is a member of BJC HealthCare, one of the nation’s largest healthcare organizations. BJH serves as a training hospital for Washington University School of Medicine, University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in Saint Louis, and Goldfarb School of Nursing. BJH is home to Siteman Cancer Center and Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology and is a comprehensive transplant center.
Recent Significant Projects
Over the past several years, Dr. Mondiello has served on different pharmacy organizations’ standard setting committees, which has given her the opportunity to incorporate her professional experience into maintaining the standards of the profession. In New York, she was actively involved in grassroots advocacy efforts which helped introduce the pharmacy collaborative drug therapy management bill into the Senate. In 2022, she was elected president-elect for the Saint Louis Society of Health-System Pharmacists and began a Master in Health Administration (MHA) program.
Initial Involvement in ASHP
Dr. Mondiello has been a member of ASHP’s Section Advisory Group on Ambulatory Care Pharmacotherapy since 2019. She has served as a CV reviewer for ASHP's CV review program and has served as a student and resident poster mentor at previous Midyear Clinical Meetings. She has also served as a field tester for the BCACP Review and Recertification Course. In August 2021, she presented on the importance of advocacy at ASHP’s Ambulatory Care Pearls Webinar.
Why did you become involved in ASHP?
Dr. Mondiello first became involved with ASHP as a student pharmacist for residency application resources. As her career has progressed from student to resident to practicing pharmacist, ASHP has provided abundant resources for professional development for every stage throughout her journey.
Advice for Someone New to Specialty Area
Network as much as possible with those in your desired field to learn more about different opportunities and practice models across different sites. Additionally, never underestimate the power of advocacy, especially at the grassroots level. Advocacy is a shared responsibility among pharmacists and promotes legislative change
How would you explain the value of ASHP to a friend or colleague?
ASHP is invaluable for career and professional development. Dr. Mondiello utilizes ASHP for live CEs, networking, precepting resources, board recertification, meetings and conferences, and to remain up-to-date on current events and advocacy initiatives in the profession.
What is the value of ASHP for the profession?
ASHP advocates for the profession on both the state and national level. ASHP’s political action committee builds relationships with members of Congress to educate them about the issues that health-system pharmacists face and supports congressional candidates who champion pharmacists’ patient care role. ASHP works diligently to provide its members (pharmacists, technicians, and students) with opportunities to practice at the top of their license to advance the profession while improving public health.
