Her Story

Megan Day is an ambulatory care clinical pharmacist located in Birmingham, Alabama. She received her Doctor of Pharmacy from Samford University’s McWhorter School of Pharmacy and went on to complete PGY1 residency training at the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Afterwards, she completed PGY2 residency training at Samford University's McWhorter School of Pharmacy specializing in ambulatory care, with a primary clinic site location at Christ Health Center in Birmingham, Alabama.

Dr. Day practices with the primary care clinic at Cooper Green Mercy Health Services Authority (Cooper Green). She assists in resolving medication access and adherence issues, addressing medication related questions, monitoring for adverse effects and drug interactions, and providing medication and disease state education. She enjoys working alongside primary care providers to assist with appropriate pharmacotherapy utilization for chronic disease state management and improving quality metrics. 

Describe the facility where you work (eg. Is it a teaching hospital? Health Center?) 

Cooper Green is a publicly funded urban ambulatory care center, serving all residents of Jefferson County, Alabama - regardless of their ability to pay. The facility is an affiliate of UAB Health System and provides both primary, specialty, and ancillary care to an adult medicine population.

Recent Significant Projects

Dr. Day is currently working to establish clinical pharmacy services within primary care at Cooper Green. Additionally, she recently piloted a new service at the facility with the implementation of Medicare Annual Wellness Visits, performed in collaboration with Medicine. 

Initial Involvement in ASHP

Dr. Day was recently appointed as a member of the Section of Ambulatory Care Practitioners advisory group on Medication Management Services in July of 2022.

Why did you become involved in ASHP? 

Dr. Day initially became involved in ASHP to network with her pharmacy colleagues to improve medication management services. Now she enjoys advocating for ambulatory care pharmacy services within different health systems. She enjoys working to support the profession's efforts to advance patient care and creative ways to improve quality metrics.

Advice for Someone New to Specialty Area 

Do not be afraid to jump in and form new relationships with various providers within your practice site! Take the initiative to advocate for your specialized skill set - this is key to establishing relationships that can advance the profession of pharmacy, and ultimately improving patient outcomes.

How would you explain the value of ASHP to a friend or colleague?

ASHP fosters great professional relationships! There is so much insight to gain from our pharmacy colleagues and ASHP provides the platform to form great relationships. 

What is the value of ASHP for the profession?

ASHP highlights the work that pharmacy can add to various health care teams! Additionally, the work that ASHP conducts to advance the pharmacy profession is invaluable.
