Marie Renauer

Her Story

Dr. Renauer received her Pharm.D. and MBA from Drake University in 2009. She completed a PGY1 Pharmacy Practice with Focus in Ambulatory Care Residency and PGY2 Ambulatory Care Specialized residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics from 2009-2011. She is currently the Associate Director, Ambulatory Clinical Pharmacy Services for Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) where she leads the strategic expansion of ambulatory clinical pharmacy services including collaborative drug therapy management and clinical pharmacogenomics implementation. Prior to coming to YNHHS Dr. Renauer was a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pharmacy at University of Michigan and Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Ambulatory Care at University of Michigan Health System.

Facility

Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) is Connecticut’s largest healthcare system, consisting of Bridgeport, Greenwich, Lawrence + Memorial, Yale New Haven and Westerly hospitals, and Northeast Medical Group, a physician foundation of primary care and medical specialists. YNHHS is affiliated with Yale University and Yale Medicine the clinical practice of Yale School of Medicine faculty members and provides comprehensive, integrated, family-focused care in more than 100 medical specialties. There were 2.4 million outpatient encounters across the Health System in 2018.

Recent Significant Projects

I have been fortunate to be involved with successful development, approval, and implementation of a business plan that has lead to the incremental addition of 16 FTEs to expand ambulatory clinical pharmacy services at Yale New Haven Health System. This includes the addition of new clinical pharmacy services to pulmonary, infectious disease and heart and vascular clinics and expansion of services in hospital-based primary care and transplant clinics. As part of this expansion we have implemented new CDTM services, ambulatory pharmacy technician roles, and telehealth services. I also implemented a new PGY2 Ambulatory Care Residency that recently received full accreditation and expanded to 2 positions.

Initial Involvement in ASHP

I am currently a member of the Section of Ambulatory Care Pharmacists and appointed to the SAG on Compensation and Practice Sustainability for 2019-2020.

Why did you become involved in ASHP? 

I initially became involved in ASHP as a student for awareness of professional and patient care issues and to build a professional network. I have remained involved throughout my career in the various positions I have transitioned through.

Advice for Someone New to Specialty Area

Build connections in and outside of pharmacy and your organizations. You will be surprised to find how making even a quick connection can help create champions for initiatives you are trying to lead.

How would you explain the value of ASHP to a friend or colleague? 

ASHP has been a valuable resource to me in all the roles I have had throughout my training and career; as a student, clinician, residency director, and now administrator. I have found ASHPs resources and networking opportunity to be professionally and personally supportive.

What is the value of ASHP for the profession?

ASHP is an important and timely advocator for our profession, patient care, and safe cost-effective medication use.
