PharmD, BCACP, CPP

Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner

Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center

Wilmington, NC

After earning her PharmD at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in 2020 in her hometown of Memphis, Dr. Sherwin completed a PGY1 pharmacy practice residency at the Birmingham VA Health Care System followed by a PGY2 in ambulatory care at the University of Kentucky HealthCare.

Dr. Sherwin is a Clinical pharmacist practitioner at Novant Family Medicine Wilmington, assistant professor of family medicine for the family medicine residency program, and preceptor for Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NH NHRMC) pharmacy residents and pharmacy students from colleges of pharmacy in the state of North Carolina.

Describe the facility where you work:
Novant Family Medicine Wilmington is a hospital-based teaching clinic. The clinic is in an underserved region and provides care to patients of all ages, many of whom have Medicaid. The 18 family medicine residents see the majority of the patients are acting as their primary care providers. They provide a variety of services including chronic and acute care, osteopathic manipulative therapy, women's health, and gender-affirming care. The practice site has had a pharmacist on faculty for over 10 years.

Recent Significant Projects:
I recently celebrated my first anniversary at this practice site where my focus has been on diabetes quality. Through both interprofessional and one-on-one visits with patients, I increased access to diabetes medications and technology and improved overall clinic A1c outcomes. I also play a role in improving access and education for patients on gender-affirming hormone therapy by coordinating with the outpatient specialty pharmacy 340B program and providing injection teaching.

Initial Involvement in ASHP:
This is my third year on the Section of Ambulatory Care Practitioners Advisory Group on Medication Management Services, and I look forward to continuing my involvement in ASHP throughout my career.

Why did you become involved in ASHP?
My PGY2 residency program director has been a SAG member for several years and encouraged me to apply. I've always been interested in pharmacy advocacy and found this to be a great way to play a part in that.

Advice for Someone New to Specialty Area:
Family medicine is a little bit of everything. It's primary care, but it's also pediatrics, geriatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry; the full spectrum of medicine. Be open to learning new things and trust that your training has taught you all you need to be a clinician on the family medicine team when you encounter something that was not part of your residency training.

How would you explain the value of ASHP to a friend or colleague?
ASHP resources in general have been valuable to me as a new practitioner. The professional connections I've made on the SAG have also been really fulfilling. I enjoy getting to hear from other practitioners about their clinics or practice models, and it's granted me a network of pharmacists to reach out to for advice in my career and my practice.

What is the value of ASHP for the profession?
Similar to how I would describe it to a colleague, the practice resources and network opportunities are very helpful. ASHP's advocacy work, especially for medication cost and access, is also something I really appreciate.
