Initial Involvement in ASHP
I am actively engaged within the Sections of Ambulatory Care Pharmacy (SACP), Pharmacy Educators (SPE), and Clinical Scientists and Specialists (SCSS). Within SACP, I currently serve on the Ambulatory Care Pharmacotherapy Advisory Group. I am also the current Geriatrics Discussion Leader for the SCSS and recently completed the ASHP Well-being Ambassador Program. Finally, I serve as a co-advisor for the WVU Student Society of Health-system Pharmacy.
Why did you become involved in ASHP?
I first became involved in ASHP as a student pharmacist. The opportunities to engage in professional development and advance my profession through ASHP have always been readily available, as a student pharmacist, new practitioner, and ambulatory care specialist. With the addition of the SPE, I now also can engage with colleagues on the academic side of my career as well.
Advice for Someone New to Specialty Area
It's incredibly important to find out who the stakeholders are in your practice setting early on, especially if the area is new to ambulatory pharmacists. These stakeholders may be people in formal leadership roles or those without formal titles who can champion a cause. Building relationships with these individuals early on will increase success when rolling out new initiatives.
For those in a shared role, it is important to lay out expectation with the stakeholders from both entities to clearly delineate roles and responsibilities to each entity. This can also help confirm reporting structure for performance evaluations and promotion.
How would you explain the value of ASHP to a friend or colleague?
ASHP is my professional home, and where I find the most engaging opportunities to give back to my profession. Whether you are looking for advocacy resources, clinical webinars and podcasts, ways to get involved with advisory groups, ASHP has something for everyone.
What is the value of ASHP for the profession?
ASHP unites the voice of pharmacists and advocates on our behalf. The more we can get pharmacists aligned and moving toward the same goals, the more progress we will make. ASHP helps facilitate this by listening and engaging members in outreach opportunities.
