Professional Bio: Dr. Jessica Conn recently completed her PGY-1 pharmacy residency at the Orlando VA Healthcare System and is excited to be starting her new role as a Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner at the Northern Arizona VA Healthcare System. She received her Doctorate of Pharmacy from the University of Florida College of Pharmacy in 2021 and has stayed involved with ASHP and her state-affiliate for the past 4 years. She previously served as a member of the New Practitioners Forum Resident Advancement Advisory Group and as a member and chair of the ASHP Pharmacy Student Forum Student Society Development Advisory Group. In her free time, she enjoys spending quality time with her dog, collecting houseplants, and going to concerts.

Reasons for selecting this career path and professional interests:

I chose to pursue a career in pharmacy a few years after earning my bachelor’s degree in forensic science. I was always drawn to the drug analysis aspect of forensics, but I found that I wanted to help people in a more direct way. Getting to know people, learning what is important to them, and helping them reach their goals is what brings me the most reward, which is why I chose a career in pharmacy as an outpatient clinical pharmacist in a primary care setting.

Professional Interests:

  • Ambulatory care
  • Chronic disease management
  • Pharmacy organization involvement
  • Professional development
  • Well-being and resilience

Interest in serving on the NPF Executive Committee:

Throughout pharmacy school I served on the ASHP Pharmacy Student Forum as a work group lead and chair. After graduation, I was appointed to be a member of the ASHP New Practitioners Forum. Through these experiences, I have connected with many motivated and passionate pharmacy students and pharmacists from around the country. We all work together to create new ideas, content, and resources for ASHP initiatives, which contribute to advancing the profession of pharmacy. Having the opportunity to continue giving back to the profession, especially to newer practitioners such as myself, and build upon my leadership skills, drove my desire to serve in this capacity on the ASHP New Practitioners Forum Executive Committee.

Benefits of being involved in ASHP as a New Practitioner:

Being involved with ASHP greatly expands your professional network, fosters personal and professional growth, and offers many leadership development opportunities. I am so grateful of the people I have met through ASHP, as there is so much value in working with pharmacists from different parts of the country to gain perspective, share ideas, and build friendships. Watching myself grow within the organization has given me the desire and confidence to continue striving for the next challenging role. As a new practitioner, it is very exciting to be afforded the opportunities ASHP provides to help shape the future of the profession and ultimately improve patient care and outcomes.
