Carrie Morton, Pharm.D., M.B.A., believes in giving back to the pharmacy profession. “You will gain far more from volunteering than the time you invest into it,” said Carrie, Administrative Director of Pharmacy and Lab Services at Deaconess Health System in Evansville, IN.

Carrie joined ASHP in 2002, when she was considering applying for a residency or fellowship. “I did not end up doing a residency, but after graduation, as I stepped into my first supervisor role, I relied on ASHP for resources,” she said.

She also applied for the ASHP mentor program, and her mentor encouraged her to get involved in ASHP. “I am a member today because of the resources offered by ASHP, but also because of the network of colleagues I have built and the continued desire to move our profession forward,” said Carrie.

She first became interested in pharmacy in high school, when she attended a program through the local hospital where she spent two weeks living on the hospital’s property and exploring all the specialties. “My group leader was in pharmacy school, and I was attracted to the type of work, the impact pharmacists were having, and the fact that I didn't have to work with blood — I had to leave the room during my surgery experience,” said Carrie, who has served on various ASHP Section Advisory Groups for more than 10 years. She is currently serving as the Chair of the ASHP Section Advisory Group on Innovation Management.

Carrie has also hosted networking round tables at ASHP meetings, participated in the ASHP mentor program, and volunteered at the 2016 Midyear Clinical Meeting in Las Vegas.
