Gene B. Decaminada
Gene Decaminada is the pharmacy manager for the Yale New Haven Health Home Infusion Program overseeing the building of a new clean room and the creation of a successful program. He is responsible for adherence to standard operating procedures, policies and performs on-site training. Decaminada is a graduate of St. John’s University in New York where he received his BS degree. His professional interests include USP 797/800 Standards for Sterile Compounding, having been involved for almost 40 years. He has been a home infusion pharmacist for over 20 years and a member of National Home Infusion Association (NHIA) since 1999. Decaminada has held a variety of clinical and leadership positions. His interest areas include clean room guidelines and standards for sterile compounding. Decaminada is a past member of the BPS Taskforce where he participated in a one-year role delineation study for sterile compounding credentialling. He served as an active member of the BPS Sterile Compounding Council for 3 years, which ended in December 2021. He has been an active past member of both the NHIA Sterile Compounding, Standards and Outcomes Committees. Currently a member of both the NHIA Sterile Compounding Practice Committee (SCPC) and the Vizient Home Infusion Subcommittee. In January 2021, Decaminada was selected for the honor of becoming a Fellow of the National Home Infusion Association (FNHIA). This established him among an exceptional group of leaders in the field with contributions toward promoting excellence in home infusion practice. In September 2021 Decaminada was awarded the Connecticut Pharmacists Association (CPA) Professional Pharmacy Performance award. September 2023 Decaminada was awarded the (CPA) Connecticut Pharmacists Bowl of Hygeia award. Recently, he received the 2024 CPA Fellowship award. Outside of the office, Decaminada enjoys coaching hockey and volunteering time with a special needs group, the Northern Braveheart’s Hockey Club.

Facility:
Home Infusion Pharmacy, sterile compounding, 503a Facility. I direct and organize programs, activities, and personnel to meet the goals of the department and the organization. I’m responsible for fostering staff growth and development as well as maintaining the provision of human resource policies and procedures. I’m responsible for the provision of all facets of pharmaceutical care related to intravenous homecare patients.
Recent Significant Projects:
I have recently been involved in the following projects: IV process workflow, understanding biannual cleanroom certification reports, how to manage conflict or addressing difficult employees, serving as a mentor for both Yale New Haven Health and the Connecticut Pharmacist Association (CPA), an active member of the NHIA (National Home Infusion Association) Sterile Compounding Practice Committee.
Advice for Someone New to a Specialty Area:
Please try to learn as much as you can about sterile compounding, HVAC/cleanroom systems and regulatory and state requirements. Enjoy the ride!
Involvement with ASHP:
I am currently an active participant in two ASHP committees: ASHP SPPL Advisory Group on Value, Quality, and Compliance and ASHP Infusion Services Strategy Committee Meeting.
Reason for ASHP Involvement:
To continue to learn each day and become a better pharmacist. I enjoy networking with others from across the country most.
Value of ASHP for Peers or Colleagues:
I enjoy giving back to the profession of pharmacy. I value that my opinion, over the past 42 years matters.
Value of ASHP for the Profession:
Strengthening the profession of pharmacy and their sub-specialties such as sterile compounding.
