Cedars-Sinai Medical Center

Los Angeles, CA

Hai Tran received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy at the University of the Pacific. After completing a general practice residency at the University of California Irvine Medical Center, she pursued an antimicrobial stewardship residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. She is a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist and the director of drug use policy and stewardship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Current Responsibilities:
Tran oversees the drug use policy, antimicrobial stewardship, and clinical pharmacy prior authorization program. Currently, she is responsible for formulary management, leads the hospital pharmacy clinical programs, develops and implements cost saving strategies, revenue retention, and recovery for high cost/target drugs.

Facility:
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is a private, nonprofit, teaching and research hospital with 915 licensed beds and a Level 1 trauma center. The medical center provides a full range of inpatient, outpatient, emergency and diagnostic services to communities in the Los Angeles area. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is part of Cedars-Sinai, a nonprofit academic healthcare organization serving the diverse Los Angeles community and beyond. With pioneering medical research achievements, education programs defining the future of healthcare, and wide-ranging community benefit activities, Cedars-Sinai sets new standards for quality and innovation in patient care.

Recent Significant Projects:
In collaboration with the medical staff, I established the Glycemic Management Subcommittee and have implemented various initiatives that resulted in a significant reduction in hypoglycemic events. Through the Bundled Payments for Care Improvement Advanced efforts, I led the Pharmacy Steering Committee to develop and implement strategies to optimize patient management, reduce length-of-stay and readmission.

Advice for Someone New to a Specialty Area:
Be curious! Don’t be shy or afraid to ask questions and reach out to colleagues and experts in your area of interests.

Involvement with ASHP:
I am a member of the Section of Clinical Scientists and Specialists for the last few years and was recently appointed as the vice chair of the Clinical Leadership SAG.

Reason for ASHP Involvement:
I wanted to be more involved with ASHP initiatives, to meet and share best practices with pharmacy leaders across the country.

Value of ASHP for Peers or Colleagues:
As a longtime ASHP member, I have appreciated getting to know many wonderful members, learning from other leaders, and being part of an organization that continues to innovate pharmacy practices and advocate for patients.

Value of ASHP for the Profession:
ASHP offers resources for all its members, regardless of your credential, specialty or years of practice. There are many opportunities to be involved and help move the profession forward.
