Elizabeth Johnson

PharmD, BCEMP, BCPS

Clinical Pharmacy Manager

John Peter Smith (JPS) Health Network

Fort Worth, TX

Johnson received her PharmD  from the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy in 2012. She then went on to complete a PGY1 pharmacy practice residency at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, then a PGY2 in emergency medicine at Detroit Receiving Hospital in Detroit, Michigan.

Current Responsibilities:
Clinical pharmacy manager, practicing in the emergency department and at the bedside; precepting students and residents.

Facility:
JPS Hospital is a level I trauma teaching hospital that is part of a health system with over 25 clinics across Tarrant County. It is certified in stroke, heart attack and sepsis care, and the ED sees about 140,000 patients per year.

Recent Significant Projects:
Recently, I have worked on optimizing formularies across the JPS health network, developed new processes for clinical activities, and how we track our outcomes. I assist in maintaining the formulary for the clinics, outpatient, inpatient, oncology infusion center and for the jail we serve. Recently we reviewed and ensured continuity across the network. Within the past couple of years, we also implemented a monthly clinical activities tracker to give a better representation of what clinical pharmacists’ impact is on the inpatient side (rounding, AMS activities, high cost savings, etc).

Advice for Someone New to a Specialty Area:
Take opportunities as they come to get involved even if it's outside your comfort zone; all will lead to new contacts and give you more experience for your future.

Involvement with ASHP:
Currently I am on the Section Advisory Group for Clinical Leadership and serve as one of the faculty members on the emergency medicine review course.

Reason for AHSP Involvement:
I became involved in ASHP to develop professional skills and stay active within the EM pharmacy group. It has opened many doors for me to work on projects that will affect my specialty in the future.

Value of ASHP for Peers or Colleagues:
ASHP has tons of resources no matter where you are in practice or what specialty you are part of. It offers continuing education both in person, virtually, short or long; it offers BPS credits; drug shortages information; guidelines on best practices and so much more. It has a wealth of resources that are helpful for anyone from students to the most seasoned leaders.

Value of ASHP for the Profession:
ASHP supports health-system pharmacists continue to grow and be a voice for the future of healthcare.
