Shanna Whitwell
Shanna Whitwell received her PharmD degree from Auburn University’s Harrison College of Pharmacy in 2011. Whitwell works at Baptist Family Pharmacy at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center.
Current Responsibilities:
Whitwell is an outpatient pharmacy operations manager and residency program director.
Facility:
Baptist Family Pharmacy is an outpatient pharmacy located at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center (MBMC). The medical center is a 440 bed acute care, community based hospital in Jackson, Mississippi. MBMC is a member of the Baptist Memorial Health Care system, one of the largest not-for-profit health-care systems in the country. MBMC now admits approximately 21,000 hospital patients and performs more than 220,000 outpatient procedures yearly. The outpatient pharmacy offers a "meds to beds" program and support for medication access.
Recent Significant Projects:
I have been at Baptist Family Pharmacy since it first opened in 2017. I helped to create and implement the meds to beds program as well as implementing a charity pharmacy through Dispensary of Hope. Most recently, I have collaborated with the outpatient department clinics at MBMC to offer prior authorization assistance, patient assistance enrollment and medication shipping to improve medication adherence.
Advice for Someone New to a Specialty Area:
As a community pharmacist we are the last stop between a patient and their medications. We can play an important role in affordability and adherence by taking the time to listen and counsel our patients.
Involvement with ASHP:
I am currently the Chair of the Section of Community Pharmacy Practitioners Patient Care Section Advisory Group.
Value of ASHP for Peers or Colleagues:
The resources available through ASHP are invaluable for continuous education and for patient care.
