Josie Quick

Josie Quick attended North Dakota State College of Science and completed the Pharmacist Assisted Technician Self-Instructional Modules (PATSIM) Program in 2006. She holds PTCB certificates in billing and reimbursement, immunization administration, medication history, medication therapy management, point-of-care testing, supply chain and inventory management, and technician product verification. She earned her Advanced Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT-Adv) and her Certified Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician (CSPT) credentials through PTCB.

Facility
Sanford Health South University Pharmacy is a health-system hospital pharmacy that also services clinic patients that are seen that day. It has around 75 beds and fills around 250+ outpatient scripts each day.

Recent Significant Projects
I have recently been part of an IV room workgroup to focus on the "always" and "nevers" for cleanroom safety. We are also in the process of creating a workgroup for our retail pharmacy to focus on insurance billing, education, and accurate inventory needs. I assist in our inter-campus transfers and billing and process our DSCSA documents.

Involvement in ASHP
I am a member of the ASHP Council on Pharmacy Practice and a member of the Section of Inpatient Care Practitioners (SICP) Advisory Group on Compounding Practice. As part of my involvement with the councils, I have attended ASHP’s Policy Week and participated in Legislative Day by meeting with members of Congress on Capitol Hill. 

Why did you become involved in ASHP?
I became involved because I believe that pharmacy technicians need to advocate for ourselves and be a part of the changing roles in the pharmacy workforce. I feel honored to be a part of the pharmacy technician voice in our workforce.

Advice for Someone New to Specialty Area
Advancing and expanding knowledge as a pharmacy technician can help you stand out in your field and open doors to new opportunities. Here are some ways to grow professionally: Pursue advanced certifications; continue your education; gain experience in different settings; network and join professional organizations; stay updated on industry trends; and develop soft skills.

How would you explain the value of ASHP to a friend or colleague?
ASHP has been instrumental in networking and learning opportunities. I am grateful for the experiences I have received by being a part of participating in Policy Week and seeing how ideas and changes occur through the processes.

What is the value of ASHP for the profession?
ASHP is a driving force in the profession in many ways that involve everything from policy making and updates to accreditation of pharmacy technician and residency programs. ASHP is a vital piece of the pharmacy puzzle.
