Daniel M. Ashby, B.S.Pharm., M.S., D.Sc. (Hon), FASHP, retired July 1, 2020, as Vice President and Chief Pharmacy Officer for The Johns Hopkins Health System. He was also a Clinical Professor at the University of Maryland and an Adjunct Professor at the Notre Dame of Maryland University School of Pharmacy.
He began his career at Grace Hospital in Detroit, assigned to critical care. He later became the Coordinator of Drug Information before being promoted to Assistant Director. Mr. Ashby continued his career as Associate Director and Director for the 999-bed Harper Hospital in Detroit. He also served as a faculty member for Wayne State University and the University of Michigan Colleges of Pharmacy. From 1991 to 1999, Mr. Ashby served as the Director of Pharmacy for Methodist Healthcare in Memphis, a 14- hospital system in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Arkansas with faculty appointments at the University of Tennessee and the University of Mississippi Colleges of Pharmacy. An ardent champion of pharmacy residency training, Mr. Ashby served as a preceptor for more than 325 pharmacy residents during his career.
An influential leader, Mr. Ashby, played pivotal roles in several of ASHP's key initiatives. In the early stages of the ASHP Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative (now the PAI 2030), Mr. Ashby chaired the Pharmacy Advisory Panel and helped guide the development and implementation of ASHP’s work to drive pharmacy practice change. He also championed the creation of the ASHP Task Force on Pharmacy’s Changing Demographics and spearheaded a first-of-its-kind memorandum of understanding between ASHP and the Association of Black Health-System Pharmacists.
A longtime member of the ASHP Commission on Credentialing, Mr. Ashby played a key role in ensuring the quality of residency programs and setting training standards. He chaired the ASHP Residency Advisory Committee, which made nearly 40 recommendations to the Commission on Credentialing for improvements to ASHP's residency accreditation survey process. Mr. Ashby also served as the inaugural chair of the ASHP International Accreditation Commission and was a member and chair of the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education Accreditation Council, the body responsible for accrediting graduate medical education programs in the United States and Canada.
Active in professional associations throughout his career, Mr. Ashby served on numerous ASHP councils and committees, including the House of Delegates, Committee on Goals, and Committee on Nominations. He is a Past President of ASHP and served on the ASHP Board of Directors. Mr. Ashby also served as an elected officer in the Southeastern Michigan, Michigan, and Tennessee societies of health-system pharmacists. He also served as a member of the Michigan Pharmacy Certified Technician Board of Examiners. He was an original member of the task force that wrote the Pharmacy Certified Technician Training Manual and examination.
Mr. Ashby is a longtime supporter of the ASHP Foundation and served on the Foundation’s Board of Directors. He participates in the ASHP Foundation-funded Visiting Leaders Program as a speaker and is a member of the 2021 Pharmacy Forecast Advisory Panel.
A Fellow of ASHP, Mr. Ashby is a 2020 recipient of the ASHP Board of Directors Honorary Membership and the 2011 recipient of the Harvey A.K. Whitney Lecture Award, ASHP’s highest honor. He is the recipient of numerous other awards and honors, including the ASHP Distinguished Leadership Award, Michigan Pharmacist of the Year, Wayne State University Distinguished Alumni, the Maryland Society of Health-System Pharmacists Board of Directors Award, the Association of Black Health-System Pharmacists President's Award, the University of Maryland’s B. Olive Cole Honorary Alumnus award, and an honorary Doctor of Science from the Board of Regents of the University System of Maryland.
Mr. Ashby has published numerous articles and made over 100 presentations on a variety of topics.
