PGY2 Residencies

You may find that you want to continue your training and focus in a particular area of practice or take care of particular types of patients. A postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency is designed to build upon those competencies developed by a postgraduate year one (PGY1) pharmacy residency pharmacy, and when appropriate provide training to allow you to prepare for board certification.

All ASHP-accredited residencies are full-time commitments that require at least one year to complete, so you may need to consider two years if you wish to specialize and complete both a PGY1 and PGY2 pharmacy residency. Some PGY2 pharmacy residencies may be offered in combination with other programs, such as a master's degree or a fellowship, which may require additional years to complete.

All ASHP-accredited PGY2 residencies require that an applicant complete a PGY1 accredited pharmacy residency first. PGY2 residencies participate in the Resident Matching Program (RMP). Some organizations that offer both PGY1 and PGY2 pharmacy residencies may offer a PGY1 resident an "early commitment offer" to stay at their organization to complete a PGY2 program. This "early Commitment offer" must be completed by mid-December and be listed with the National Matching Service.
