In recognition of National Sickle Cell Awareness Month, ASHP sits down with Shenandoah University Professors Clarence Moore and Rebecca Andersen as they share the mechanisms behind Vaso-Occlusive Crisises and how pharmacists play an important role in managing medication therapies in this critical population.

Dr. Clarence Moore is a board-certified oncology pharmacist who completed his Doctor of Pharmacy at Howard University College of Pharmacy. Following graduation, he completed a PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency at Shore Medical Center in Somers Point, NJ and a Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Fellowship at Howard University in Washington DC. Dr. Moore has been a faculty member at the Shenandoah University, Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy since 2016 and currently serves as an oncology clinical pharmacy specialist at INOVA's Schar Cancer Institute in Northern Virginia.
Dr. Rebecca Andersen completed her Doctor of Pharmacy at Wingate University in North Carolina and residency training at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, Virginia. Dr. Andersen is a board-certified pharmacotherapy specialist and is a faculty member at the Shenandoah University Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy. She currently serves as an internal medicine clinical specialist at INOVA Fairfax Medical Center in Northern Virginia.
Melanie R. Smith, Pharm.D., BCACP, DPLA is the Director of the ASHP Section of Ambulatory Care Practitioners. In this role, Dr. Smith serves as the staff liaison to the Section of Ambulatory Care Practitioners Executive Committee. She also acts as an ASHP information resource and provides guidance to ASHP members on pharmacy practice in various ambulatory care practice settings.
Previously, Dr. Smith was the Director, Educational Programs within ASHP's Educational Services Division. In this role, she helped coordinate continuing educational programming for ASHP's national meetings. Prior to joining ASHP, Dr. Smith was a Clinical Pharmacist II with United Healthcare as well as a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist with the Roudebush VA Medical Center.
Dr. Smith received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of North Carolina and her Doctor of Pharmacy from Virginia Commonwealth University. She completed an ASHP-accredited PGY1 residency at the Lexington VA Medical Center in 2008 and obtained her Board Certification in Ambulatory Care in 2011.
