Lindsay Davis, Associate Professor at Midwestern University and Gina Luchen, ASHP’s Director of Academic Programs, discuss the five key concepts to consider when implementing Socratic dialogue in one’s precepting practice. Dr. Davis addresses common preceptor challenges and pearls in preparation for ASHP’s National Pharmacy Preceptors Conference.

Lindsay E. Davis, Pharm.D., is an Associate Professor at Midwestern University College of Pharmacy - Glendale (CPG). She is a graduate of the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy and completed her residency training at the Phoenix Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Since 2010 she has precepted over 105 students and residents in cardiology, internal medicine, and academia rotations. Her clinical site is a private cardiology practice. Dr. Davis is honored to have received the Mentor of the Year, Teacher of the Year, and Outstanding Educator Awards during her tenure at CPG. She has provided over 30 presentations at the state and national level including ASHP midyear, ASHP NPPC, ACCP, APhA, AACP, McKesson ideaShare, and Lily Teaching Conferences. Her scholarly publications are focused on teaching and precepting methods as well as cardiovascular pharmacotherapy. She was the principal investigator for the Habits of Preceptors research project which culminated in the development of the Habits of Preceptors Rubric via the consensus driven Delphi Method; more about this project can be found at www.habitsofpreceptors.org. Dr. Davis is the Program Coordinator for CPG’s Clinician Educators Program, a post-graduate longitudinal teaching and learning curriculum for pharmacists, which began in 2013, has over 500 enrollees to date, and provides more than 30 hours of classroom and mentored teaching opportunities annually to resident and preceptor participants across the state of Arizona.
Gina Luchen, Pharm.D. serves as the Director of Academic Programs at ASHP. In this role, Dr. Luchen leads the development and implementation of programs and initiatives related to student pharmacists, schools and colleges of pharmacy, and pharmacy educators. She serves as staff liaison to the Pharmacy Student Forum and Section of Pharmacy Educators. Prior to this role, Dr. Luchen served as an ASHP Executive Fellow in Association Leadership and Management at ASHP. She received her Bachelor’s in Pharmaceutical Studies and Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy. Following her studies, she completed a PGY1 Community-Based Residency at the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy in conjunction with Balls Food Stores in Olathe, KS.
