Patient Care to Global Health: Exploring a Non-Traditional Pharmacy Career Path

Pharmacy professionals have a transferable skill set that can be applied in a variety of settings. From health-systems to the community to research and education, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are assets to the healthcare team and patient care delivery no matter the discipline. In this episode, we speak with Ishmael Qawiy, Pharm.D. MBA, BCACP about his career journey and his experience transitioning from patient care delivery to working on global health projects in the non-profit sector.

Ishmael QawiyDr. Ishmael Qawiy is a Senior Pharmacist with Vital Strategies in New York City where he manages procurement and oversees pharmacy quality assurance for the STREAM clinical trial. Prior to his role with Vital Strategies, he was a Clinical Pharmacist with United Healthcare in Baltimore, MD. He completed a PGY-1 at the Washington DC VA Medical Center, and PGY-2 Public Health Residency with Bristol Myers Squibb and Rutgers University. Ishmael has a Doctorate Degree in Pharmacy from Florida A&M University and a Master of Business Administration from Rutgers University.

Christina MartinChristina Y. Martin, Pharm.D., M.S., is the Director of Membership Forums. In this role, Dr. Martin leads the development and implementation of strategies and programs for student and new practitioner members. Dr. Martin received her Pharm.D. from the University of Pittsburgh before completing a combined PGY1/PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration residency at the University of Kansas Hospital. Dr. Martin holds a Master of Science degree in Pharmacy Practice from the University of Kansas. Dr. Martin is an active member of the American Society of Association Executives, currently serving on the Young Professional Committee.
